Texas police name ‘person of interest’ in DeBerry woman’s disappearance

Wednesday, March 19, 2014

On Monday, Texas police identified Rodris Webster, 25, as a person-of-interest in the recent disappearance of a 19 year-old woman. The woman, Alicia Benefield, of DeBerry, Texas, was reported missing on Friday.

Webster is described as Benefield’s boyfriend. He was arrested in January and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Benefield was the complainant in that charge according to media reports. Webster remained jailed until Benefield dropped the charge on March 5.

Police investigators inspected a trash dumpster located in the nearby town of Waskom on Sunday morning. In it they reportedly found Webster’s wet, muddy hoodie with Benefield’s keys in the pocket. Police interviewed Webster for 5 hours on Sunday, but released him around 6pm. The woman, still missing on Tuesday morning, is described as petite size, about 110 pounds, with a nose piercing and a tattoo on one arm saying “Wanda Ree”. She was last seen wearing a white sweater and brown tights.

A police official told reporters Webster had not confessed to any criminal activity: “The story is out there that he has confessed and we do not have a confession”. Benefield’s mother told reporters she expects her daughter to call her. “She is going to call. I’m going to be the first one she calls, matter of fact. I don’t care how mad she think[s] I am. She’s going to call me.”

Inspectors close Chicago landmark Healthy Food restaurant after finding dead mouse in cooler

Saturday, April 2, 2005

Chicago city inspectors closed the landmark Lithuanian restaurant Healthy Food on Thursday, after finding mouse feces on the meat slicer and cutting board, and a dead mouse in the cooler.

The restaurant has operated at 3236 S. Halsted, on the south side of the city in the Bridgeport neighborhood, since the 1930s.

Wikinews reporter David Vasquez placed a call to the restaurant to inquire if they were open. The call was answered by a woman who said, “No, we’re closed. There’s some technical difficulties. I’m sorry. Thank you for calling.” A second phone could be heard ringing in the background.

Streets and Sanitation spokesman Matt Smith told the Chicago Sun-Times, “To reopen, they’re going to have to present us with a revamped game plan for not only rodent control but also housekeeping, they’ll have to make all the corrections that our inspectors point out,” he continued, “and pass a very stringent follow-up inspection.”

Patrons have praised the restaurant’s sauerkraut soup and other dishes over the years. Before it was closed, the restaurant had a lot of traffic from the nearby Cook County Circuit Court. The restaurant was once voted “Best Ethnic Eastern European Restaurant in Chicago”, according to New City.

Perhaps you did not know how difficult it would be when you got back. Fortunately, there is home health care. NATO tankers in Pakistan attacked, four killed

Sunday, April 25, 2010

Several NATO oil tankers were set on fire in the Punjab province of Pakistan, and four policemen were killed in a gunfight with unknown gunmen yesterday, reports say. The Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA) news service attributes the attack to the Taleban.

The incidents occurred in the town of Talagang. Aslam Tareen, the regional police chief, said that “around a dozen” tankers were set on fire after being attacked with rocket-propelled grenades. “Later on, they exchanged intensive fire with the police and killed four of our officers while two more were injured,” Tareen said, adding that a petrol station nearby the oil tankers also caught fire.

DPA says the attack was the deadliest on NATO supply convoys in the province. Close to three quarters of all oil, food, and military supplies to landlocked Afghanistan first pass through Pakistan.

5 Things You Should Know About Eye Floaters

By Greg Garner

Medically termed as Myodesopsia, eye floaters are transparent deposits of various shapes and sizes in the vitreous humour. These specs float in front of the eye against a light background and may appear like insects. The problem is quite common and about 70% of people get affected with this syndrome in their lifetime. Surprisingly children as young as 9 years are diagnosed with having floaters.

Causes of Eye Floaters:Liquefactions in the vitreous jelly is the primary cause of eye floaters. Floaters are a very common problem among those who have crossed 50. As you age the collagen fibres embedded in the vitreous humour thickens causing these fragments to appear. Retinal detachment, presence of red blood cells and inflammation in the jelly caused by white blood cells are also some of the reasons for eye floaters. Posterior vitreous detachment and shrinkage of the vitreous jelly are prime causes for this irritating disorder.Uveitis, chronic yeast infections, hyalois artery regression, toxoplasmosis, sarcoidosis, allergiesinjuries and infection are some common reasons for this disorder.

Diagnosis of Eye Floaters:Ophthalmologists use slit lamps to diagnose eye floaters. Eye experts also dilate the pupils with eye drops and then scan the eye carefully with an ophthalmoscope. However further tests might be necessary if any other complications are detected.

Treatment with Medicines: Minor cases of eye floaters can be cured easily with anti-inflammatory medicines, antibiotic drops and herbal extracts. However for severe conditions surgery and laser treatments become necessary.

Surgical Procedures: Eye floaters can be annihilated by Virectomy. The procedure involves making three channels in the sclera. Through the first channel a saline is resupplied to the eye via a port, while the second channel is used to infuse a fiber optic source and the third channel is used to introduce a virector.

Laser Treatment: This is very effective treatment meted out to patients. Brief outbursts of laser liquidate the deposits. However some doctors advice against the treatment as damage to the eye is likely if proper procedural guidelines are not adhered to.

Diet for Floaters : Doctors advice patients to take magnesium-rich food to cure eye floaters. Caffeine intake must be restricted and fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamin C must be taken amply. These are lemon, broccoli and Kiwi. Chinese wolfberry is also an ancient herb which can give great results. Drinking plenty of water and fruit juices can arrest the disorder.

Eye floaters are undoubtedly annoying but most will vanish with time. Interestingly stubborn floaters which refuse to get cured can trigger a gamut of psychological disorders like depression, stress etc. The good news however is that most eye floater are not harmful. If so, then the best treatment according to some doctors is to ignore them completely and learn to live with them. Often also undiagnosed liver conditions to diabetes are responsible for the problem. If such is the case then curing these disorders can relieve you from floaters. For more information, head to other online articles about these issues.

Mysterious power failure takes down Wikipedia, Wikinews

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Wednesday, February 23, 2005

On Monday, at 10.14 pm UTC, the Wikimedia server cluster experienced a total power failure, taking down Wikipedia, Wikinews, and all other Wikimedia websites.

The servers are housed in a colocation facility (colo) in Tampa, Florida, USA. They occupy two racks, with each rack receiving electricity from two independent supplies. However, both supplies have circuit-breakers in them, and both opened at the same time, leading to a total power failure. All computers immediately went down. It’s normal for fire safety regulations to prohibit uninterruptible power supplies in colos, with the colo providing its own UPS and generator instead. The circuit breakers were on the computer side of this emergency power system, so none of the computers continued to receive power to survive the breaker trip or shut down safely.

The actual reason why the circuit breakers tripped is currently unknown.

When power was restored, it was discovered that most of the MySQL databases that store the data which makes up Wikipedia et al had been corrupted. The main database and the four slaves had all damaged the data on their hard disk drives beyond the ability of the auto-correction to repair. Only one copy survived safely, on a machine that is used for report generation and maintenance tasks, which remained 31 hours backlogged while catching up after an unusually heavy update load during the previous week.

Volunteer Wikimedia engineers worked through the night rebuilding the databases from the sole good copy onto the other servers. The Wikipedia database is over 180Gb in size, making the copying process last 1.5 – 2 hours for every server it was performed upon.

Regular back-ups of the database of Wikipedia projects are maintained – the encyclopedia in its entirety was not at risk. The last database download was made on February 9; all edits since then could only have been laboriously rebuilt from logs and recovered from the damaged database requiring much more time and effort.

Limited read-only service was established late Tuesday afternoon, with editing becoming possible 24 hours after the power failure. Final repairs continue now, as well as upgrades to prevent similar issues in the future. Server-intensive features, such as categories and ‘watchlists’ that display recent changes to selected articles to registered users, remain disabled to ease the load on the recovering systems.

The process which led to the damage originated with the operating system, disk controllers, or hard drives failing to flush the data correctly.

If the power to a database server is cut mid-write, the database may be corrupted and unreadable, however the operating system, hardware, and software are designed to make this very unlikely. In a previous incident in 2004 power was also lost to a server but the database was undamaged.

To avoid such damage, each database server saves a copy of an edit to be applied to the database on a separate storage system before making the actual update to the database itself. This so-called ‘write-ahead logging’ should ensure that in the event of a system crash, the database can be rebuilt from a ‘last-good’ state by replaying the edits saved in the log.

Earlier this year popular blogging site LiveJournal suffered a similar power failure when another customer at their colocation facility pressed an Emergency Power Off button, intended for use only by firefighters. The company suffered database corruption similar to that seen at Wikimedia.

LiveJournal are now fitting UPS to their servers to ensure that they have time to shut down safely in the event of a power failure. Wikimedia was said to be investigating the possibility of fitting similar equipment at the time of this failure.

Several pundits have suggested that the use of another database, such as the proprietary database Oracle or the free PostgreSQL, would have avoided the database corruption seen at the server cluster. A post-mortem of the incident show the failure was in the operating system, or the hardware, or some combination of the two. LiveJournal, which also uses MySQL, reported similar database corruption after their power cut.

The Wikimedia foundation only allows the use of free software on its systems, and future versions of the Mediawiki software will support the PostgreSQL database.

Users are reminded that during times of system failure or excessive demand, they can still search Wikipedia using Google. The articles may be viewed using Google’s cache.
