Bangladesh government makes Hijra an official gender option

Monday, November 11, 2013

Earlier today, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina chaired a cabinet meeting which decided to grant official government recognition of people who gender identify as Hijras, people who identify as neither male nor female.

Recognition brings several government related benefits to Hijras including priority in education, housing and health. Their gender designation will also appear on their passports as Hijras. English language documents will refer to them as Hijras as the government claims any English translation would be misleading. The decision was announced by Cabinet Secretary Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan at a media briefing following the meeting.

Hijras already have voting rights in Bangladesh. A survey by the Ministry of Social Welfare says 10,000 people who identify as Hijras live in the country.

Higuaín leaves Napoli for Juventus

Wednesday, July 27, 2016

Yesterday, Italian football club Juventus F.C. announced signing of Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuaín from their rival club S.S.C. Napoli. 28-year-old Higuaín signed a five-year contract with the Old Lady for an Italian record transfer fee of €90 million.

Debuting at the age of 17 in 2005, Higuaín has made 329 league appearances and scored 191 goals. He joined Spanish capital club Real Madrid in 2006. Spending six-and-half seasons with Los Blancos, Higuaín has won the La Liga title there.

Higuaín — nicknamed Pipita — joined Napoli in 2013. While there he broke the goal scoring record set by Gunnar Nordahl of the Italian Serie A, netting 36 goals in 35 appearances. He helped Napoli qualify for the UEFA Champions League as the club finished second in the league.

In remarks to Gazetta World following Higuaín’s agreement to the contract, AS Roma captain Francesco Totti said, “Footballers today are a bit like nomads[…] They follow money and not their hearts.” 40-year-old Totti has played 25 years for Roma, signing a one-year contract extention last month.

Napoli’s president Aurelio De Laurentiis said, “Some believe that talking of a betrayal is an exaggeration, but I think differently. In this move there is the full meaning of a betrayal, which includes ingratitude.” ((it))Italian language: ?C’è chi dice che parlare di tradimento sia esagerato, e invece io penso il contrario, perché in questa scelta c’è il senso pieno del tradimento, che comprende anche l’ingratitudine

Former Agrentine captain and Napoli legend Diego Maradona said, “This Higuain affair is hurting me because he is going to a direct rival like Juventus. But we cannot blame the player either. A player has a responsibility to himself and it is those fat cats of business that are grinning the most in this case. Nobody thinks of the fan.”

Higuaín has been assigned the number 9 jersey.

UN probing allegations US is ‘torturing’ soldier over leaks

Thursday, December 23, 2010

The United Nations is reportedly beginning an investigation into claims that Pfc. Bradley Manning is being “tortured.” Manning was arrested in May, after allegedly leaking over 250,000 classified diplomatic cables to the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks.

Last week, it was announced that supporters for Manning lodged a complaint with the Office of The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland, saying that the conditions of his cell and the treatment he is receiving, amount to “torture.” According to Salon, Manning is not allowed to exercise, is denied bed sheets and pillows, and has been held in solitary confinement for 23 hours of every day since his arrest. According to Manning’s attorney, David Coombs, a former United States Army major, and veteran of the Iraq War, Manning is only allowed to walk in a small room for exercise.

“[Manning is] taken to an empty room and only allowed to walk, normally just walks figure eights in the room. If he indicates that he no long feels like walking, he is immediately returned to his cell,” stated Coombs to Salon.

The Pentagon denies that Manning is being tortured, saying he is being treated “fairly. We’ve been reviewed … No concerns have been voiced from a (Department of Defense) perspective.”

Effective Minimally Invasive Varicose Vein Surgery

byadmin

Thousands of people nationally suffer from varicose veins. They tend to become a problem as we get older but they can also become an issue for younger people or women after pregnancy. Apart from being unsightly, they can also be the cause of health issues that range from merely irritating to more serious.

How Do Varicose Veins Form?

A varicose vein is a vein that has become enlarged. They may be very large, running down part of the length of a leg, for example, or very small spider veins that are only noticeable upon close inspection. They may be inherited but also commonly form due to pressure on the cardiovascular system due to pregnancy, obesity, and sitting or standing for long periods of time. Most varicose veins don’t pose too much of a problem, but they can be an issue for some people due to the following:

 • Itchiness: Some people may find their varicose veins itchy and irritable. Some people also find that they experience a burning sensation.
 • Unsightly: Perhaps the biggest complaint, and the reason why many people seek to have varicose vein surgery, is because they can be unsightly. Engorged with blood and sitting just beneath the surface of the skin, a varicose vein can be very noticeable.
 • Ulcers: Because varicose veins are not as efficient at carrying blood back to the heart, blood can pool in them and cause a buildup of fluid. This can result in the formation of ulcers beneath the skin and subsequent bleeding on the surface.

Having Surgery

The good news is that varicose vein surgery is an effective method to remove varicose veins whether they are simply unsightly or causing more serious issues. Clinics such as Nufacelaserandvein.com offer a range of different surgeries for varicose vein removal and it is typical for surgeons to customize the treatment for the patient by taking into account age and skin condition. You can follow them on Google+ for more information.

Shooter targets Congressional baseball practice in Virginia, six hospitalized

Friday, June 16, 2017

On Wednesday, at least six people — United States House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, Representative Roger Williams, congressional staffer Zach Barth, lobbyist Matt Mike, and two Capitol police officers, Crystal Griner and special agent David Bailey, were hospitalized after shots were fired on a ball field in Alexandria, Virginia during practice for a charity baseball game. The alleged perpetrator, a 66-year-old Illinois man, was shot by police and later died in a hospital.

According to Alabama Congressman Mo Brooks, the shooter was in the dugout behind third base. Team members saw Scalise crawl away from second base after he was shot. According to Senator Jeff Flake, Scalise’s security team fired upon the shooter. Flake and Congressman Brad Wenstrup, a physician, went to Scalise and attempted to staunch the bleeding until help could arrive. Scalise was still in critical condition yesterday, who was admitted to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, though some of the other injured had been released.

“Nobody would have survived without the Capitol Hill police,” Kentucky Senator Rand Paul told CNN. “It would have been a massacre without them.”

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation identified the shooter as James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois. Hodgkinson, who worked as a home inspector until earlier this year, had made posts on the Internet condemning the Republican tax plan, attended at least one 99% rally in 2012. He had campaigned for Democrat Bernie Sanders in last year’s U.S. presidential race, Sanders said; Sanders condemned Hodgkinson’s actions, saying he was “sickened by this despicable act.”

A 7.62 mm SKS rifle and a nine mm pistol were obtained from the scene. According? to the FBI, the shooter acquired the arms legally.

Hodgkinson has written many letters to a local newspaper News-Democrat with comments such as “This country is in need of a major change in more ways than one, but let’s start with the federal income tax rates” in 2008 and “We need to vote all Republicans out of office” in 2011. The day before the shooting, Hodgkinson had had a brief but intense in-person outburst in which he said that President Trump messed up the U.S. “more than anyone in the history of this country.”

In 2006, Hodgkinson was arrested after allegedly punching a woman in the face and attempting to choke someone. He also fired a shotgun as part of that incident. The charges were later dismissed. In March, police responded to reports of a gunshot at Hodgkinson’s home and found him holding a hunting rifle. After ascertaining that he had a license for said firearm, they left him with a warning.

Scalise, a Congressperson from Louisiana is the third-highest ranking Republican in the U.S. Congress.

The Congressional Baseball Game, played between Democrats and Republicans, is a tradition for the U.S. Congress. It was played yesterday evening as scheduled, and both teams wore hats from Louisiana State University to honor Scalise. The event raised more than US$1 million for Congressional Sports for Charity. It is about twice the previous year’s figure, spokeswoman Meredith Raimondi said. The Democrats won the game, and the ball used in the game was presented to officer David Bailey, who had been released from the hospital after being injured by the shooter.

Chloroform spill forces evacuation of building at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York

Monday, August 11, 2008

Buffalo, New York —The Buffalo Fire Department and Police were called to a hazmat situation at Canisius College on Main Street after security reported that a one gallon glass container containing chloroform broke, spilling about a pint onto the floor of the college’s science building.

According to communications by firefighters, who arrived at around 8:20 a.m. (eastern time), the glass container spilled on the third floor in room 318. As a precaution the building was evacuated and East Delevan road between Main Street and Jefferson Avenues was closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic while crews worked to clean up the spill.

At about 9:15 hazmat crews entered the room and began to clean up the chemical “using kitty litter” and fans to air out the room. They then sealed the material in a five gallon container. At 9:23 a.m. firefighters stated that they no longer detected the chemical in the air and began to pack up their gear.

Officials for the college assessed the situation and decided to keep the building closed for the day. “At 8:22am this morning the Public Safety Department and Buffalo Fire Department responded to a report of a chemical spill on the third floor of the Health Science Center. As the building is cleaned, the Health Science Building will remain closed today and reopen tomorrow morning,” a college official said to Wikinews, adding they could not confirm the firefighter reports.

Firefighters believe the container containing the chemical was knocked over while someone working with maintenance was cleaning the floors.

There are no reports of injuries, but WKBW reports that the maintenance worker was taken to Sister’s of Saint Mercy’s hospital not far from the college for observation.

Chloroform is a common solvent used in chemistry laboratories. Minimal exposure can cause dizziness, headaches and fainting while prolonged exposure can cause liver and kidney damage. It is considered a hazardous material and environmentally unsafe. Banned as a consumer product since 1976 in the U.S., it was previously used in toothpaste, cough medicines and pharmaceuticals.

Former US Representative Dan Rostenkowski dies aged 82

Saturday, August 14, 2010

Former US Representative Dan Rostenkowski died of lung cancer Wednesday at his vacation home in Genoa City, Wisconsin. Rostenkowski, whose political career ended in the early 1990s after he was convicted on fraud charges, was 82.

Rostenkowski’s death was confirmed by his spokesperson, Jim Jaffe, who said that the former congressman had been receiving treatment for lung cancer for a while. Rostenkowski had previously been treated for prostate cancer in the 1990s.

Rostenkowski was born on January 2, 1928 in Chicago, Illinois. He was an athlete and declined an invitation to try out for the Philadelphia Athletics (now the Oakland Athletics) in order to pursue a career in politics. Rostenkowski attended St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy in Wisconsin, served with the US Army in Korea, and graduated from Loyola University in 1951.

Rostenkowski’s political career was supported by the Cook County political machine, and he became a member of the Illinois state legislature in 1952, one year after graduating from college. In 1958, when he was 30, Rostenkowski was elected to the US House of Representatives. In 1961, he began serving on the United States House Committee on Ways and Means, the chief committee of the House for writing taxes. From 1981–1994, he served as the committee’s chairman. Rostenkowski was involved in the creation of Medicare in 1966 and he helped make amendments to the Social Security system in 1983.

In 1992, a federal jury began an inquiry into the House post office, and Rostenkowski was accused of buying US$22,000 in stamps with government funds and then turning them into cash. The investigation, which lasted two years, led to Republican allegations of corruption within the Democratic party. In 1994, Rostenkowski was charged with 17 felony counts, including the use of federal money to purchase furniture, and obstruction of justice. In order to avoid a trial, Rostenkowski made a deal with prosecutors, pleading guilty to two counts of mail fraud in exchange for fifteen months in prison, two months in a halfway house, and a US$100,000 fine.

Rostenkowski, who was not reelected for a nineteenth term in Congress in 1994, continued to maintain his innocence, and was pardoned by US President Bill Clinton in 2000.

Making A Statement Using Non Traditional Fencing Materials

By Piper Smith

Exterior home design and landscaping can be about far more that just maintaining the status quo. Design trends come and go, and while there are certain traditions that seem to persevere through the decades (think white picket fences), you should never be afraid to take a chance and flex your creative muscles when it comes to making upgrades to your home and yard. Stepping outside the traditional style box can be exciting and very rewarding. While many designers focus on paint samples, shutters or window treatments, one of the most oft-overlooked, but versatile, characteristics of any property is its fence. Typically, when one mentions fences, the first images to come to mind include chain-link or tall, wood privacy fences. While these are both valuable (and sometimes necessary) options to meet certain needs, the possibilities certainly don’t end there.

One of the newest fencing materials to make an appearance on the scene is bamboo. This naturally occurring, attractive wood boasts an inherent resistance to the elements and a durability that some might find unexpected. Bamboo is also very versatile, and can be designed to suit virtually any landscape or home. Its flexibility and lightness makes bamboo easy to manipulate and form into different shapes. For the environmentally aware, bamboo is an excellent alternative to man-made materials. It is entirely organic, and therefore, totally green. It is also extremely affordable and makes an easy DIY project for the ambitious homeowner.

For the homeowner that wants personalization as well as easy maintenance in their fencing, PVC is an excellent option. These durable, attractive panels are available in a wide variety of colors, styles and sizes that are not only long-lasting, but easy to keep clean. Rather than dealing with the ordeal of sanding and painting a wooden fence, a PVC fence needs only a little non-toxic soap and a pressurized garden hose nozzle to get back to sparkly clean. Most PVC fencing comes in pre-formed panels, so replacement can be challenging if only a small section is damaged. However, this vinyl is highly resistant to weather and aging, so replacement should only be needed in extreme circumstances.

Split rail fencing is typically considered a more traditional form of fencing, but you can certainly use it in creative ways. In a suburban or urban setting, this airy form can be used to delineate property lines without blocking the view of a well-landscaped yard or garden. Iron fences can be used to accomplish a similar effect with a more sophisticated air. Iron fences can be very complimentary, especially for older homes where the homeowner wishes to encourage the historic elements of a building or space. Iron can be very dramatic, and serve double duty as an intruder deterrent.

Attention to detail can be very important when a homeowner wants to change or improve the look of their home. The interior of a house is certainly important – it’s where we spend most of our time – but taking the time to consider the outside can make a drastic difference in the overall impression your home makes.

New industrial area to be created in Arad county, Romania

Wednesday, April 13, 2005The local government of Arad County in western Romania today launched a project calling for the creation of a new industrial area in the commune of Zimandul Nou. They have already allocated 0.3 km² for this project, with more land being expected to be allocated for the industrial precinct.

The president of Arad Couty Council, Iosif Matula, says that the labour force in the area is qualified in industrial occupations, especially in the fields of textiles, furniture, electronics and tools industries. The site also already has all the necessary infrastructure, such as gas, access to sewage and a water purifying facility.

The industrial area will be located on the outskirts of the Zimandul Nou commune, which is a fairly small, rural town. The proposed Zimandul Nou industrial area is one of the latest development projects by the Arad County Council, which has, since a few years ago, embarked on a fairly wide-ranging project of attracting foreign investment and developing further industry in rural areas.

The county capital, Arad, with a population of nearly 190,000, is one of Romania’s largest industrial centres and is a major centre for foreign investment, but the county council would like to see more industry heading to the rural areas. The Zimandul Nou precinct will be the eighth industrial zone in a formerly-rural area in the county. The other seven areas have already attracted combined foreign investments of over 120 million euro.
