Whats Making Us Fatter?

By Sandra Prior

A simple tomato sandwich has around 240 calories. A teaspoon of table sugar has only 15 calories. To use up this small amount of energy, all you need do is sleep for 20 minutes or take 10 minutes styling your hair. Or just reading this article should burn up a spoonful. Add playing the piano for 10 minutes and taking a quick shower and you will have used up most of the calories from the table sugar the average person consumes in a day.

Why then is obesity on the increase and reaching epidemic proportions? The main cause of weight gain is a lack of perspective. Weight gain is a result of eating more food than we can use up living, laughing, loving and working. Put quite simply, no particular food can be singled out as the culprit, although it probably helps to point out that a gram of fat has twice the calories of a gram of table sugar. But it gets more interesting. An ever increasing body of scientific research on table sugar shows that some of it in the diet actually helps to curb cravings, helps prevent bingeing sessions and aids adherence to healthier, low fat diets.

Table sugar is just a natural carbohydrate, nothing more, nothing less. It is natures own sweetener, made up equally of fructose, and glucose. It has been used to make good food more palatable and fun for hundreds of years in exactly the same form as today.

Build a Better Breakfast

Before your next well balanced breakfast of oats and fresh fruit, ask yourself this, wheres the protein and fat? After all, with the exception of eggs and sausage, typical breakfast foods cereal, fruit, toast, pastries and juice provide you with almost nothing but carbohydrates, often in the form of sugar. That means more morning meals are highly unbalanced.

Most bodybuilders already know they need high quality protein the kind found in meat, eggs and dairy to nourish and build muscle. But fat is important at your morning meal too. Thats because, along with the protein, it slows the absorption of carbohydrates into your bloodstream, providing you with a steady supply of energy instead of a quick sugar rush (often followed by a sugar crash). And by keeping you full longer, this protein/fat combo can also help shrink your midsection.

In a recent study, researches found that when people had eggs for breakfast, they ate 1050 fewer kilojoules during the rest of the day than when they had a bagel instead. Of course, you dont need a written article to tell you how to make scrambled eggs. So here are some new ways to fill your belly, feed your muscles and energize your body first thing in the morning.

Toast with Tuna

Think of it this way. Youre simply trading high sugar jam for high protein tuna salad. Its easy to make ahead of time, and by tweaking the conventional recipe to include cranberries, you get a hint of jam sweetness.

1170 can solid tuna, in brine

2tbsp dried cranberries, roughly chopped

onion, minced

1 tbsp mayonnaise

2 tsp balsamic vinegar

Salt & pepper to taste

Mix all the ingredients together. Serve a scoop on a piece of toasted wholegrain bread. Makes 2 servings.

Berry High Protein Yoghurt

With this recipe, you control the ingredients, the manufacturer doesnt. And that means you can ensure its free of hard to avoid added sugar, while nearly having triple the protein of most ready to eat yoghurts.

450g plain yoghurt

2 cups fresh or frozen unsweetened mixed berries

4 scoops (about 80g) vanilla or strawberry whey-protein powder

Sweetener to taste (optional)

Line a two cup mesh strainer with a paper coffee filter and place it over a mixing bowl. Fill the filter with the yoghurt, cover with a clean cloth or waxed paper, and set the bowl (with strainer inside) in the fridge for several hours. Much of the liquid from the yoghurt will drain into the bowl, resulting in thicker yoghurt. In a blender, puree the berries along with the whey-protein powder and sweetener. Once the yoghurt has drained, place it in a large bowl and stir in the berry puree. Serve in one cup portions and store for up to three days. Makes 4 cups.

Almond Pecan Waffles

These high protein waffles boost the protein and fat intake, while dialing back the carbs. You can make almond flower by chopping slivered almonds in a food processor.

1 cup almond flour

cup finely chopped pecans

cup whey protein powder

1 tsp baking powder

110g low fat plain cream cheese, softened

6 eggs

cup whipping or fresh cream

While your waffle iron preheats, combine the almond flour, pecans, whey protein powder and baking powder in a small bowl. In another bowl, whisk the cream cheese and two eggs until smooth. Add the remaining eggs one at a time and whisk thoroughly after each. Mix in the cream, then stir in the dry ingredients. Spoon about a third of the cup of batter onto the hot waffle iron and cook for about three minutes, until golden brown. Top with low sugar syrup (recipe below), peanut butter or fresh fruit. To let them cool, place in a zip lock bag and freeze. When you ready to eat one, just pop it into the toaster. Makes about 6 18cm waffles.

Cottage Cheese Pancakes

These pancakes are not only packed with high quality protein, but also lighter and fluffier

than the classic versions. Serve with a bit of butter and five milliliters of low sugar syrup and cinnamon for each pancake. Using sugarlite cuts the kilojoules by nearly two thirds.

Low Sugar Syrup

500ml Sugarlite (Hulletts)

2/3 cup fat free milk

Combine ingredients in a pot, stir occasionally, bringing it to the boil. Stir continuously till it reaches the thread stage, remove from stove and pour over pancakes.

Pancakes

1 cup cottage cheese

2 eggs

cup of butter

cup milk

cup whole wheat flour

1 tbsp baking powder

1 tbsp sugar

1 tsp salt

tsp nutmeg (optional)

In a large bowl, stir together the cheese, eggs, butter and milk. Add the flour, baking powder, sugar, salt and nutmeg, and blend lightly until just mixed. Grease a griddle with cooking spray and place over medium heat. Put a large scoop of batter on the griddle and use the back of a spoon to spread it out evenly. The pancake is ready to flip when you begin to see small air bubbles form, about three to four minutes. Flip and cook for another minute or two. Makes about 12 10cm pancakes.

Mocha Custard

A 350ml frappuccino contains 44g sugar and a hefty dose of caffeine, but hardly any nutrients. And really, should you ever spend R15 on a glorified cup of coffee? Instead, try this custard alternative. It will provide you with a jolt of java, a 21g infusion of protein and a hefty dose of coconut fat, which contains a healthy type of saturated fat (called lauric acid) that boosts immunity.

1 430ml can coconut milk

2 cups strong coffee (regular or decaf)

3 eggs, beaten

3 scoops (about 60g) chocolate whey protein powder

Sweetener to taste

Pinch of salt

In a saucepan, combine the coconut milk, coffee, beaten eggs, whey protein powder, sweetener and salt. Whisk to mix well. Gently cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture begins to thicken and lightly coats the back of a spoon. Remove from the heat, pour into a covered pitcher, and cool quickly by placing the pitcher into an ice water bath until its half submerged. Serve chilled in one cup portions for a quick breakfast. Or blend it with crushed ice until smooth and thick for a frozen mocha treat. Makes 4 cups.

England: Baby born with heart outside body operated on; surviving, three weeks after birth

Friday, December 15, 2017

On Tuesday, parents of baby Vanellope Hope Wilkins and representatives of Glenfield Hospital in Leicester, England reported to the press that Vanellope has survived three weeks after being born with her heart outside her chest, a rare birth defect known as ectopia cordis. She has been operated on three times, initially less than an hour after her birth on November 22, and will need further surgery; doctors believe she is the first baby in the United Kingdom to survive being born with the condition.

Vanellope’s parents, Naomi Findlay and Dean Wilkins, live in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire; Vanellope is Naomi’s third child. They learnt about the defect from a prenatal scan, but opted not to terminate the pregnancy. She was delivered prematurely by caesarian section by 50 people including four teams, placed in a sterile plastic bag and operated on 50 minutes later for the first of three times so far. Frances Bu’Lock, a consultant paediatric cardiologist at Glenfield, noted that unlike some cases of ectopia cordis, she does not have any heart defect or other displaced organs; at nine weeks, part of her stomach also protruded, but by sixteen weeks, only her heart was affected. Dr. Bu’Lock had originally told her parents she had only a “remote” chance of surviving.

Ectopia cordis is very rare and reportedly occurs in fewer than eight of every million babies born alive. It usually leads to a stillbirth when the pregnancy is not terminated, and with the likelihood of other associated congenital defects, plus the risk of infection, Vanellope’s survival is very unusual. Dr. Martin Ward-Platt, a member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, stated “we wouldn’t expect a case like this to happen in the UK more often than once every five to 10 years.”

Her mother said they called her Vanellope after a character in the Disney film Wreck-It Ralph because she was born with “a glitch”.

Australian man allegedly ignites carpet, plastic with static electricity

Saturday, September 17, 2005

A story about a man carrying over 30,000 (sometimes reported as 40,000) volts of static electricity in his body, allegedly generated by a wool sweater and nylon jacket combination, is circulating through major news outlets. The story, carried first by the Warrnambool Standard, says that the man, Frank Clewer, a 58-year old cleaner from Dennington, involuntarily created a scene by causing fire departments to evacuate three buildings where he had left his mark, before he realized he was causing the burn marks on carpets and allowed the fire department to help him.

The story has been picked up by The Register, Guardian, BBC, USA Today, Reuters, local agencies of ABC, the San Francisco Chronicle, and other news outlets.

Several unanswered objections mark the story as a possible hoax:

 • Clewer enters and exits his car several times in the story — if he opened the car by touching its presumably metal lock, he would surely release some electricity into the car through his hand; everyone has at some point experienced the painful shock of touching a door handle or car keys to a lock. Though the car might not be grounded, it would still be at a lower potential and thus energy would be transferred. This would be noticeable; the story does not comment that Clewer understood what was happening to him.
 • Firefighters supposedly “used a device to check static electricity on him and his belongings.” While firefighters would be likely to carry a high-voltage multimeter around to measure the current and voltage ratings of downed power lines, it is unlikely that the same device could measure such a large voltage resulting from a very small amount of static energy without de-electrifying it.
 • For such a large voltage to be stored, humidity would have to have been extremely low on that day for the air around him not to ionize and source current, removing the static energy.
 • If he was carrying such a large voltage, his hair would probably have stood on end, as this is a notable effect when one touches a Van de Graaf generator. Note: It is uncertain at what voltage this effect begins, and since Van de Graaf machines routinely exceed Megavolts of electric potential, this may not be a verifiable objection.
 • This statement: “Firefighters took possession of Clewer’s jacket and stored it in the courtyard of the fire station, where it continued to give off a strong electrical current.” (Reuters UK) First, there is no reason they would need to take possession of the jacket — the static electricity could be dealt with by simply dumping water on it. Second, the jacket could not “give off” an electric current without some continuous source of energy, which, in storage, is impossible. It is possible that the jacket could hold a voltage, but the effects of this would not be visible — if they were, they would be short-lived as the jacket would lose its static energy. In any event, the current would be miniscule.
 • The amount of energy stored on Clewer’s person and possessions could not have been more than a few Joules; this is unlikely to have burned carpet.

The equation for stored energy in capacitors is:

U = ( C × V 2 ) / 2 {\displaystyle U=(C\times V^{2})/2}

Where U = energy, C = capacitance, and V = voltage. A human body by itself typically has a capacitance of around 250 pF, which would mean a voltage of 30,000 V would produce energy of 0.11 joules. Even if Clewer’s possessions resulted in a parallel capacitance of 1 microfarad, this would still only result in an energy storage of 450 J. This amount of energy would be insufficient to burn carpet or char plastic, although a spark could ignite flammable vapor or gas.

Metabothin : An Exact Metabolife 356 Clone?}

Submitted by: Janice Duryea

People with excessive weight issues have been trying out many different solutions for their problem. In the United States, one of the most popular and proven effective is what is called as Metabothin. It is a copycat version of the unpatented fat-burning supplement Metabolife 356, which has been discontinued due to a legal ban on one of the main ingredients, ephedra.

The American Generic Laboratories has deigned and formulated Metabothin to resemble Metabolife 356, which for some time had enjoyed a strong support and patronage from weight conscious consumers in the US until the legislative ban on ephedra. The prohibition stemmed from a 2005 court order favoring the US Food and Drug Administrations move to stop distribution of supplements that contain 10 mg and more of ephedra, an herb known for its fat-burning features.

The court decision involved another supplement company, Nutraceutical Corp. The pharmaceutical firm argued that its product containing ephedrine was dangerous. The court first agreed with the company but when the regulator appealed the decision, the appellate court favored it.

Thus, Metabolife 356 was instantly discontinued. Its copycat version, Metabothin somehow still manages to be distributed across the US market but only through online means. That is the reason why the supplement could be considered a rarity especially these days. The US court has ruled that ephedrine is dangerous and that products containing the substance should be stopped.

The original Metabolife 356 with Ephedra and Green Tea was popular during its time because of its ability to increase the bodys own metabolism to make it easier to burn out unwanted and excessive calories. Many Americans that time chose to use the product because it could actually and really help shed out those extra pounds. There was a precise and effective blend of herbs that comprised Metabolife 356.

For its part, Metabothin is aimed at bringing about the same effects of Metabolife 356. It also contained ephedra and caffeine, which strategically work together in a synergistic level to bring about fat burning characteristics. This nutritional supplement functions by suppressing the appetite and unnecessarily cravings for food.

Metabothin has many other active ingredients, including chromium picolinate, vitamins, royal jelly, bee pollen, goldenseal, and many other herbals. It is the combination of its ephedra and caffeine ingredients that bring about total effectiveness. Other herbs contained in the product act as enhancers to the energizing effect of the unique formula.

Ephedra is actually an herb. However, there could be other unlikely effects that its usage could bring about. That is because its nutrients actually target the central nervous system as an appetite suppressant. There is nothing risky and wrong with that except that possible abuse and over-dosage could logically lead to a serious problem. Ephedra is therefore a very powerful weight loss ingredient so that it should never be approached very lightly. There is an actual need for its imminent regulation.

Do you plan to try out and use Metabothin? You could still possibly do so as it is still available online. If you are in search for a really effective fat burner, the supplement truly is for you.

Australian government announces $52.5 million financial assistance package for Ford

Friday, May 5, 2006

Australian Prime Minister John Howard and federal industry minister Ian MacDonald today announced that the federal government would be providing Ford Australia with a AU$52.5 million (US$40.4 million) “financial assistance package”. Additional assistance will also be provided by the Victorian state government.

According to Mr Howard, the injection will secure Ford’s manufacturing operations in Australia “for the long term”.

From the package, AU$40 million will be used for the design and manufacture of Ford’s next model Falcon and Territory vehicles, which will be built in Australia.

Despite being given a major facelift in 2002 and another in 2005, the Falcon’s bodyshell dates back to 1998. The current Falcon will need to serve the company until at least 2007 when the new model is anticipated. In the meantime, it will face stiff competition from the completely new Holden Commodore (the Falcon’s major competitor) which will be released in the second half of this year.

The additional AU$12.5 million will be spent on the development of a light commercial vehicle platform, which will be built overseas and marketed to around 80 countries. Mr Howard said that the light commercial project would involve construction of a research and development centre, which will become the base for R&D projects in the region.

Mr MacFarlane said that the research facility was exciting for Australia and that it would put the Australian automotive in the spotlight.

“The funding has helped Ford Australia secure the largest automotive R&D project ever undertaken in Australia which is equally exciting news for local Ford employees and Australian component producers” he said.

“The project will see Ford Australia become a centre for automotive design and engineering excellence in the Asia Pacific region which will bring spin-off benefits for the broader industry,”

“This opportunity will put both Ford Australia, and the Australian automotive and components sectors on the world map as far as our automotive design and engineering capabilities are concerned.” Mr MacFarlane said.

Mr Howard claims that the projects will create 273 jobs and secure the future of the “iconic” Ford Falcon, which has been built in Australia since 1960.

The financial package is conditional upon Ford Australia giving the Australian automotive component industry an opportunity to supply components for the vehicles produced by the two projects.

Flash floods kill over a hundred in India, 500 missing

Sunday, August 8, 2010

Five hundred people are missing and as many as 150 are reported to have been killed by flash floods in India, caused by a sudden cloudburst that hit Indian-controlled Kashmir on Friday. The downpour struck the town of Leh and several surrounding villages, and reportedly caused a mud slide that hit the refugee-populated village of Choglamsar.

Associated Press reported that at least five foreign tourists were among those killed. Their nationalities are not known but New Delhi Television (NDTV) reported that 110 tourists, half of them foreigners, were being looked after at an Army transit camp on the Leh-Manali road. NDTV also said that the tourists had been given food, medicine and phone connections to their embassies. Flights have been arranged by the Indian government to bring affected foreign tourists back home.

Massive relief efforts are continuing; Farooq Ahmad, who is Inspector General of Police in Kashmir reported on Sunday today that “63 bodies had been identified so far and that rescue teams were fanning out to six villages near Leh that had not yet been reached during relief operations.” Believed to contain 5000 people, Choglamsar, on Leh’s outskirts, is one of the villages that rescuers have been clearing roads to reach.

The army has been called in to assist in rescue work. Thousands of troops, police and paramilitary soldiers were clearing roads in order to reach isolated villages. Those living in the upper reaches, whose housing was not adequate to provide protection, will have borne the full impact of the mud slides caused by the 12 mm of rain that fell on Friday in just a few minutes.

Officials said that rescuers were digging through crushed homes and piles of mud to search for survivors. The hundreds of reported injured are being treated at an army hospital and several makeshift clinics. Mohammed Deen Khan, a social activist who has been assisting in rescue work, said the mud was 15 feet high in some places. Heavy earth-moving equipment has been brought in to move the tonnes of mud and boulders blocking roads.

The rescue officials have faced a serious problem due to the severe damage of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) office, a telecommunication enterprise, leading to the complete disruption of communication in the Leh region. The general manager of BSNL reports that the damage has caused a loss of 120 million INR. Another telecommunication enterprise, Airtel, has provided SIM cards to local administration for setting up hotlines that people can call for assistance.

The major problem is due to the communication breakdown. If communication is restored it will help in co-ordination of rescue operations in a better way.

Pashi Tsetan, a local administration development wing (deputy director) said, “The major problem is due to the communication breakdown. If communication is restored it will help in co-ordination of rescue operations in a better way.” Other institutions like Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR), the ITBP camp, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and others have also been affected.

1,314 people, mostly tourists, have been airlifted from Leh to Delhi. Three additional Indian Airlines flights from Jammu and Delhi have been planned. Three IL-76 and four AN-32 aircraft carried relief material to Leh this morning, and four more by Jet Airways and Air India and three by Kingfisher Airlines will carry relief material and doctors to Leh.

The ITBP has sent water tankers containing drinking water to affected areas. Medical camps have been set up in villages like Saboo. The bodies of eleven persons were transported to Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan this morning.

India’s crisis comes as Pakistan is experiencing the worst floods in the country’s history.

Buddhist relic collection tours North America and world

Saturday, November 25, 2006

With the hopes of funding the creation of a statue in northern India that would end up dwarfing the Statue of Liberty, an unprecedented collection of Buddhist artifacts continue crisscrossing American, Europe, and Asia in three different, but related collections.

The Maitreya Project, the brainchild of Lama Zopa Rinpoche, seeks to build a monument and development dedicated to Buddhism at Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh in northern India. The centerpiece of this massive development will be a 152m (500 ft) bronze statue of the Maitreya Buddha, the Buddha of the future.

Buddhist belief says that there have been Buddhas in the distant past and there will be Buddhas in the distant future. The historical Buddha, the one who was born in India about 2500 years ago, is known as Shakyamuni Buddha. Buddhist belief says that sometime in the distant future the teachings that Shakyamuni Buddha brought to Earth will fade away. At that point the Maitreya Buddha will be born and gain enlightenment in order to refresh and renew Buddhist teachings.

Along with the statue, the development is also planned to include temples, exhibition halls, parks, a museum, library, and a theater as well as a hospital and educational center.

In order to move forward with this project the Maitreya Project has created collections of artifacts that are touring the world. Once the statue is built these artifacts will be housed in it for viewing.

Buddhist artifacts are usually associated with the body of the person involved. While they can be such things as bone and teeth, usually they are pearl-like objects that are found and collected after the enlightened person is creamated. These pearl-like objects are called ringsel.

There are three collections of artifacts currently touring American, Europe, and East Asia. They include relics from the immediate past Buddha, called Kasyapa, the historical Buddha, five of his original disciples, several Tibetan and Zen masters, and the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso.

Wikinews reporter Richard Kinne spent three days with the relics when the North American tour came to Ithaca, NY a few weeks ago. The relics travel with two caretakers, one of whom is always in close proximity to the relics. Setup for the relics display can take about four hours depending on the venue. Taking it down takes a bit under two hours.

Each morning of the tour the relics are taken out of their padded case and placed in clear plexiglass display cases. The relics are displayed individually in small containers called stupas. Some containers appear very full, while others contian just one very small object. Each evening the process is reversed and the padded case stays with the relic caretakers.

Between the morning and the evening people from all walks of life come to see the relics – believers, people who are curious, academics, Buddhist monks and nuns, both older folks and small children. While the Heart Relic Tour just does deals with displaying the relics, the sponsoring venue can add to the display in various ways such as lectures, meditation classes and demonstrations, or various other rituals.

The tour in North America reaches Jacksonville, FL during the first weekend of December. From there it will go to Miami between the 9th to the 11th, and then to Phoenix, AZ between the 15th to the 17th. In Asia the tour spends time in Malaysia in the first part of December.

James Brown dies of pneumonia

Monday, December 25, 2006

James Brown, often referred to as the Godfather of Soul, died in Atlanta due to congestive heart failure, combined with pneumonia. His death at age 73 was announced by his agent. After his dentist noticed something unusual with him, Brown was told to visit a doctor immediately. He was taken into the hospital yesterday for treatment of his pneumonia until his death at around 1:45 AM (6:45 AM GMT). It is not known whether he received a pneumonia vaccination, as recommended for people of his age.

He was born in 1933 and grew up in poverty until he formed James Brown & The Famous Flames. His influence on 20th century music, from funk to hip hop was profound.

Before he died, he scheduled a New Year’s Eve concert series in New Jersey and New York that would help kick off a 2007 tour.
