Daisuke Enomoto will be the fourth space tourist at the ISS

Friday, March 10, 2006Japanese entrepreneur Daisuke “Dice-K” Enomoto, 34, is set to become the fourth private citizen in space. The Arlington, Virginia-based company “Space Adventures”, which specializes in spaceflight-related travel, announced on March 7 that Enomoto was approved by the Russian space agency as a flight candidate.

Enomoto has now passed the physical examinations necessary to be cleared for training, finished the medical preparation, and signed the contract for the flight. His training with the Russian Federal Space Agency will include physical and aeronautical preparation as well as Russian language instruction.

Enomoto will be the first Japanese person to fly to the International Space Station (ISS). His trip, to take place in a Soyuz TMA-9 rocket, is scheduled for September, with a ticket price of US$20 million.

United States entrepreneur Gregory Olsen returned from the ISS in October 2005; previous space vacationers were American Dennis Tito in 2001 and South African Mark Shuttleworth in 2002.

Should You Obtain An Heir Advance For Probated Inheritance Property?

By Simon Volkov

Heir advance can refer to two different methods of receiving cash through inheritance. The first method involves transferring property rights to a funding source in exchange for lump sum cash. This type of cash advance is not a loan and heirs are not responsible for repayment of advanced funds.

The second heir advance method involves receiving annuity payments through an irrevocable life insurance trust. Decedents establish estate planning protocol that gifts payments to heirs over several years or as a one-time lump sum payment. Heirs can sell future annuities in whole or part to a funding source. This type of transaction often requires court authorization.

Funding sources are usually private investors, but some cash advancing companies and lending institutions engage in this type of funding as well. Locating a source usually involves considerable research as this is a specialized niche.

Those who engage in this practice often require heirs to be entitled to assets valued at $5,000 or more. Heirs assign property rights to the funding source, but this does not guarantee the cash advance provider will receive the property.

Since funding sources are at risk for not receiving inheritance property used as collateral they assess fees for providing advanced funds. Fees usually range between 25- and 40-percent of the assets’ appraised value. When possible, heirs should comparison shop to obtain the best probate loan rate.

Distribution of inheritance property does not occur until estates undergo the entire probate process. It is not uncommon for assets to be suspended in probate for several months. In cases where heirs contest decedents’ last will or when third party claims are filed against the estate, probate can extend for years.

If decedents die without leaving a Will the probate process requires additional time. Courts must confirm an estate administrator to manage estate settlement proceedings. Rightful heirs must be identified to ensure appropriate distribution of assets according to state probate laws.

Estates without a valid Will are referred to intestate estates. Although probate law varies by state, inheritance property is most often distributed to the surviving spouse and direct lineage relatives such as siblings, parents, and children. Heirs entitled in intestate inheritance gifts often find it challenging to locate a funding source.

If the estate is comprised of real estate secured by a mortgage note the estate is required to remit installment payments to prevent foreclosure. The estate is also financially responsible for keeping homeowner’s insurance premiums and property taxes current. When estates do not have sufficient funds the court can order the property sold.

When decedents owe outstanding debts, but do not have sufficient funds to pay, the court can order property sold. This can be problematic if assets were used to secure an heir advance. Due to associated risks, funding sources require heirs to undergo an application process.

Cash advance applicants should be prepared to provide a copy of the decedent’s Will and death certificate; estate administrator or probate attorney contact information; and a current copy of their personal credit report.

Funding sources review credit reports to determine if applicants have pending bankruptcy petitions; child support or spousal alimony obligations; or outstanding liens or judgments. These obligations can interfere with property transfers when probate settles and often prevent heirs from obtaining cash advances.

Once inheritance advances are approved, funds are provided within 1 to 3 weeks. Cash advance recipients are not responsible for repayment of advanced funds should the estate be unable to transfer probate property upon estate settlement.

Funding sources are prohibited from pursuing the estate or heirs for restitution unless it can be proven that heirs provided untruthful information to obtain the heir advance.

Neanderthals ‘knew what they were doing’: Archæologist Dr Naomi Martisius discusses her findings about Neanderthals’ behaviour with Wikinews

Sunday, June 28, 2020

Last month, a study conducted by archæologist Dr. Naomi Martisius and other researchers concluded Neanderthals living in Europe tens of thousands of years ago were more sophisticated than previously thought. The now-extinct species used to carefully select bones from a particular animal species to manufacture their bone tools, the research showed. The research was published on May 8 in Nature’s Scientific Reports journal.

Dr Martisius and her team used five bone tools discovered from Neanderthals’ sites in southwest France for this research. Four of these bone tools were found in a site called Abri Peyrony and the other one was from Pech-de-l’Azé I. These tools were just a few centimetres in size and were about 50 thousand years old, Dr Martisius told Wikinews. Microscopy analysis of these bone tools called lissoirs (smoothers) suggested Neanderthals used these tools for working animal skin to leathers.

The study stated the fauna of the sites were primarily medium-sized ungulates such as reindeer, in one layer nearly 90%. Despite the overabundance of medium-sized ungulates, Neanderthals used ribs of large bovids for making lissoirs. Dr Martisius told Wikinews this was likely due to the physical characteristics of the bovid ribs, which were “thicker” and “stronger” as compared to the “thin and flimsy ribs” of reindeers. In order to check the origins of the bone tools, the researchers used a technology called non-destructive Zooarchæology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS).

Instead of damaging the bone artefacts in order to discover its origins, the researchers collected collagen from the plastic containers in which these artefacts were kept. Collagen is a type of protein. These bone artefacts were kept in plastic containers: some were kept for about five years, some for just a few months. During this time, the collagen proteins from bone tools were stuck to the walls of its plastic containers. The collagen samples collected from the walls of the containers are broken into smaller molecules called peptides by using a chemical enzyme called trypsin.

After the trypsin has broken collagen fibres into peptides, it is analysed using a technology called Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer (ToF MS). The assisting matrix is a coloured compound. The acidic peptide is combined with the matrix, vapourised, and peptides are released. Some of them are positively-charged particles which travel across a vacuum tube in an electric field. Depending on the weight of the peptides, these molecules reach the end of the vacuum tube at different instances of time, forming a spectrum. These graphs are like unique fingerprints of a species: they are different for different species of animals. Looking at the database of such graphs, taxonomic identifications of the collagen proteins came be made.

All four bone tools from Abri Peyrony gave positive results and showed that the bones were made from large bovids, even though reindeer were more abundant during that time. One of the advantages of using bovid ribs over reindeer’s thin ribs was the bovid ribs would be more resistant to breaking during flexion, Dr Martisius said.

Dr Martisius said such non-destructive ZooMS analysis was previously conducted, but for tools no older than a few centuries. She said such an analysis had never been previously conducted for artefacts so ancient.

Wikinews caught up with Dr Martisius to discuss this research in-depth.

Food with cancer-causing dye recalled in Britain

Saturday, April 30, 2005

The British Food Standards Agency (FSA) has announced a recall of foods containing banned dyes which increase the risk of cancer. The food products were sold at the Tesco, Waitrose, and Somerfield supermarkets.

A Bristol company called “Barts Spices” found the illegal Para Red substance in their Barts Ground Paprika, which was sold in 48g and 46g jars with a “Co-op” label. The batch codes on the affected products are 5032 and 5089 (expiration Dec 2007), and 5075 (expiration February 2007).

Tesco also found that their 130g package of BBQ rice cakes (expiration November and December 2005) contained both Para Red and Sudan I.

“It would be very prudent to assume that it could be a genotoxic carcinogen,” FSA scientific advisers told reporters.

“As a company committed to supplying only the very finest quality food ingredients, we took the immediate decision to withdraw our ground paprika spice from all outlets selling the product and advertised a product recall in the national press,” a Barts Spices spokesman said in a statement.

Sudan I is only authorized for industrial use to colorize petroleum products, such as shoe polish. Para Red and Sudan I are banned under the British Colours in Food Regulations of 1995.

Britain last went through a major food recall in February, when Worcester Sauce was found to contain chili powder dyed with Sudan 1.
