U.S. Senate approves revised bailout package after controversial additions

Saturday, October 4, 2008

The U.S. Senate passed a revised bailout bill designed to help the struggling U.S. financial economy, which has measures nearly identical to the bill rejected by the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday.

“Senate Democrats and Republicans believe it is essential that we work quickly on this important legislation to restore confidence to our financial system and strengthen the economy,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

The new revisions include raising the FDIC insurance cap to $250,000, a move designed to please progressives. However, the $110 billion in tax breaks, earmarks and what has been called pork barrel spending is not offset by any increases in revenues and has added opposition to the bill from some Representatives in the House.

Earmarks added into the bailout bill included $192 million in tax rebates for the Virgin Islands rum industry, $148 million in tax cuts for the wool industry, $100 million tax cuts to the auto racing industry, and $48 million in Hollywood tax incentives.

Vice President of Taxpayers for Common Sense, Steve Ellis, offered his explanation for the pork and earmarks added in. “People who support some of these provisions will forget about the $700 billion and concerns they may have on that, and say, ‘If you give me a few million in tax breaks for my constituents, I’ll go along'”.

The tactic seems to have worked, however, managing to flip enough votes to pass the bill.

“The inclusion of parity, tax extenders and the FDIC increases has caused me to reconsider my position,” said Representative Jim Ramstad (R Minnesota), who voted against the previous bill on Monday. “All three additions have greatly improved the bill.”

But Representative Marcy Kaptur (D Ohio) was not changing her no vote. “I will not support this legislation because it’s the wrong medicine,” she said.

The Senate took H.R.1424, a bill originating in the House concerning “equity in the provision of mental health and substance-related disorder benefits under group health plans, to prohibit discrimination on the basis of genetic information with respect to health insurance and employment,” and extended it with the bailout provisions.

H.R.1424 was introduced on March 9, 2007, by Rep. Patrick Kennedy (RI-1) and had the support of First Lady Rosalind Carter. It is noted on the Congressional Website that “On 10/1/2008, the Senate passed H.R.1424 as the vehicle for the economic rescue legislation. In the EAS version of the bill (Engrossed Amendment as Agreed to by the Senate), Division A (pp.1-110) is referred to as the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008; Division B (pp. 110-255) is referred to as the Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008; and Division C (pp. 255-441) is referred to as the Tax Extenders and Alternative Minimum Tax Relief Act of 2008.” It was not treated as an appropriations bill in the House.

There were two votes in the Senate. The first was to amend H.R.1424, which required 3/5 to be accepted, which it was. The second was a vote on the bill. Passage of the Bill required only a 1/2 majority. It was passed with 74 yeas and 25 nays. Senator Kennedy did not vote.

The Benefits Of Installing A Solar Photovoltaic System In Hawaii

byAlma Abell

There was a time when energy costs in Hawaii were higher than many other areas of the country, but solar energy has changed that picture. Several years ago residents began to harness the sun’s power to create renewable energy, and today it is very common to see a Solar Photovoltaic System in Hawaii, as more residents choose eco-friendly, affordable solutions.

Solar Solutions Are Economical

When solar energy was first introduced it was often too expensive for the average homeowner. However, as technology advanced and providers became more efficient, equipment and installation costs have gone down and now it is typical for a new home to include a Solar Photovoltaic System in Hawaii. Experts such as The Sonshine Solar Corp can provide equipment that allows homeowners to harness the sun’s power to produce all of their home’s electric. They offer solar hot water heaters, too. It has been estimated that customers reduce utility bills up to 50% with natural energy. They reduce water heating costs by up to 90%. Installation of renewable energy equipment entitles customers to State and Federal Tax credits. Their savings and rebates make conversion cheap enough to pay for new equipment in a fairly short time.

Solar Solutions Help Save the Earth

When fossil fuels like oil are used to create energy, they generate tons of pollution every year. Energy professionals estimate that an average home consisting of four people emits about eight tons of carbon dioxide per year. That is almost twice what their car produces. However, the renewable energy created from the sun helps keep the air clean and fresh and conserves natural resources.

Solar Solutions Are Reliable

Now that many companies have had years of experience perfecting solar equipment, providers can offer reliable products that last a lifetime. Technicians are now experienced with the latest technology and can offer clients a variety of money-and-earth-saving energy options. Many Hawaiian solar experts have become respected members of their communities and residents now rely on them for quality solutions.

Solar energy is popular in Hawaii because it helps save the environment while saving customers money. In addition installers can now offer customers a variety of solar solutions and provide quality equipment at affordable prices.

Living with HIV during COVID-19: Wikinews talks to HIV-positive sex workers about how pandemic has affected their lives

Sunday, October 18, 2020

The spread of coronavirus led to a global pandemic, affecting various daily activities. Originated in Wuhan, China, the virus spread globally, and by March, drastic measures were taken by the Indian government. Some branches of the South Western Railway of India had started taking precautions by distributing masks to ticket collectors and guards from as early as March 8. Some colleges were suspended by March 13, their exams post-poned as the government introduced lockdown and enforced social distancing.

Announced in the evening, Indian Prime Minister asked the countrymen to get the essential products and avoid going out as much as possible. Long queues outside the grocery shops, people in masks, some in N-95 masks, and hand sanitisers at the gates of megamarts were a common sight. There were reduced items in the shops, and some stores had a limit of number of customers allowed in the store at any given time. Food delivery services, and taxi services were on haitus — workers who dependent on the profession for their daily income, while software engineers were working from home. Physical classes in schools and colleges were replaced by online lectures to prevent social gatherings.

While many relied on technology for continuing their work and earn their livelihood, Wikinews reached out to sex workers in Mysore in June who unlike others can’t maintain social distancing for their work. Two sex-workers, Akram Pasha, and Jaya (a pseudonym), who were a part of sex-worker’s group called “Ashodaya Samithi” discussed how their lives had been affected by the coronavirus, the lockdown and the restrictions they had faced.

Beauty Of Nopalea Cactus

Submitted by: Frank Yaconis

The hot desert sun is home to one of nature s wonders that has fed people and healed people for centuries. The prickly pear cactus, which grows rampant in the Sonoran desert, can be eaten as a vegetable and made into a delicious, healthy juice.

Nopalea Juice is a popular version of the prickly pear cactus juice that is skyrocketing in popularity. With the addition of some agave nectar and about half a dozen fruit extracts and concentrates, the juice glows in the colors of a beach sunset tangerine and peach and mango oranges.

The prickly pear cactus is also colorful in itself. Its flowers bloom in gorgeous rich purples and reds. The brilliant green of its flesh offsets the blossoms to perfection.

But its appearance is not what makes the prickly pear cactus so popular. The cactus is becoming widely known as a natural anti-oxidant and natural anti-inflammatory. It contains a special pigment called betalains, which are natural antioxidants and promote cellular health.

The beauty of the cactus is that it does double duty as far as benefiting the body. It helps keep you healthy right now and also may prevent diseases and ailments from occurring in the future.

The plant once only grew in the desert of the Americas, but when the Spanish discovered its plentiful benefits, they brought the plant back to grow in Europe. Now the cactus can be found growing in locales around the globe. In fact, in many cases, farmers actually plant the cactus as a crop and harvest it so they can sell it as a food and medicine.

It just makes sense that a plant that soaks up the hot sunshine would be a core ingredient in the all-natural Nopalea Juice. It contains no preservatives.

People seek out Nopalea for its help with everything ranging from acne to diabetes to possible prevent of more serious diseases and illnesses. It is believed that the special properties in the prickly pear cactus reduce inflammation.

The role that inflammation plays in a host of ailments has become increasingly clear over the past few years. Scientists are looking at connections between chronic inflammation which is the body s natural response to invaders and the incidence of disease.

What may be happening is that the body s response inflammation doesn t know when to shut down. It continues after the threat is gone and essentially goes haywire. This leads to chronic inflammation, which is in essence, the body attacking itself.

The ability to reduce inflammation and how that affects the development of disease is still under study. One thing we do know, however, is that the prickly pear cactus appears to be a natural way to fight diabetes. It is made of such high fibrous material, which eating the cactus can act as a filter and help regulate blood sugar levels. Dr. Oz demonstrated this on one of his television episodes, along with touting the benefits of the prickly pear cactus in helping with hangover symptoms.

He has called the plant one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

About the Author: Frank Yocanis has been researching and writing about helping people with

joint pain

for the past decade. He has even traveled to the Sonoran desert half a dozen times to study how Nopalea contains amazing properties that help with

swollen feet

and other swelling and joint pain in the body. He is excited to share how this antioxidant-rich drink can change your life.

Chad court sentences six French aid workers to eight years of hard labour

Wednesday, December 26, 2007

A Chadian court today sentenced six French aid workers to eight years of hard labour for their role in a plot to kidnap 103 African children and fly them to France. The four men and two women have been in custody since October 25. They were also ordered to pay damages for each of the 103 children totaling the equivalent of US$9 million.

Two others, a Chadian and a Sudenese national, were each sentenced to four years, while two other Chadians were found not guilty.

The six French aid workers just sentenced belong to Zoe’s Ark, a French charity, which had arranged for 103 children to be flown out of Chad, in what the charity described as an attempt to rescue them from the humanitarian crisis created as a result of the neighbouring Darfur conflict. However, on Wednesday a Chadian court found the six aid workers guilty of attempting to kidnap the children. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees had earlier revealed that many of the children involved were not orphans.

On November 4, seven associates of the aid workers were set free, having been exonerated of any wrongdoing in the affair.

Due to a 1976 agreement between France and Chad regarding judicial affairs, France has indicated it will press for the transfer of its nationals back to France to serve out their time in a French prison. “France, after obtaining the agreement of the members of Zoe’s Ark, and examining the implementation of the judicial co-operation accord between France and Chad, in particular article 29, will ask the Chadian authorities for the transfer of the prisoners to France,” said Pascale Andreani, spokesperson for the French foreign ministry.

Bosnia jails first female war crime convict

Tuesday, May 1, 2012

A court in Bosnia has jailed the nation’s first female war crimes convict. Rasema Handanovi?, 39, admitted six killings in the village of Trusina in 1993.

Only one other woman has been convicted of crimes relating to the 1992-5 conflict in Bosnia, Bosnian Serb ex-president Biljana Plavši?. Plavši? was jailed for eleven years by an international court in The Hague, Netherlands in 2003 and later released.

Judge Jasmina Kosovi? noted mitigating conditions for Handanovi?: She had expressed remorse for the victims, she had co-operated and given testimony for use against others in the attack, she was a war rape victim, and she had lost family in the fighting. Handanovi? received a five-and-one-half-years prison sentence yesterday.

Kosovi? noted the convict “participated with other members of her unit in the executions of three civilians and three soldiers”.

Handanovi?, now a United States citizen whom Bosnia extradited, was part of a firing squad. The Trusina incident ultimately left eighteen civlians and four prisoners of war dead. She provided evidence against six other members of Zulfikar, a special unit within the Bosnian and Herzegovinan Army. Handanovi? had earlier struck a plea bargain.

Large Hadron Collider reaches milestone

Thursday, April 1, 2010

The Large Hadron Collider—the world’s largest science experiment—shattered records Tuesday by successfully colliding particle beams at a combined energy of 7 teraelectronvolts (TeV). This marks a milestone in the collider’s progress, and will usher in the beginning of up to two years of intensive investigations.

In just a few hours, detectors along the LHC’s 17-mile tube recorded 500,000 collision events. Two beams of protons were sent in opposite directions, each with an energy of 3.5 TeV, guided by thousands of large electromagnets.

Guido Tonelli, a spokesman for one of the detectors, said “Major discoveries will happen only when we are able to collect billions of events and identify among them the very rare events that could present a new state of matter or new particles.”

The LHC will eventually shut down for about a year to prepare for 14-TeV collisions. Scientists will ultimately sift through information on billions of collision events, in hope that the results will lead to a “new era in science”.
