Managing Data Center Temperatures With A Hot Aisle/Cold Aisle System

Submitted by: Saleh Tousi

The hot aisle/cold aisle system is an innovative approach to managing temperatures in a data center. Most of the energy that is required to run data center that offers collocation is spent on cooling efforts, making sure the temperature is just right for a machine. When cooling fails, servers and equipment can also fail. Every kind of method used to tackle the heat problem of running several machines at the same time and in the same place has its own deficiencies and the ultimate solution remains to be discovered. The hot aisle/cold aisle approach is known in the industry as the best cooling design because it directs hot and cold air to designated areas in the data center so that the two temperature levels do not interfere with each other, thus creating separate spaces where cold air can stay cold and hot air can stay hot.

In a hot aisle/cold aisle design, servers in a data center are placed on racks in parallel rows. The front ends of the servers are arranged so as to be facing each other, and the back ends likewise. Floors in the aisles where the front ends of servers meet are punctured so that air conditioning coming from beneath the surface can flow upward and onto the air-intake vents of the servers. Adjacent to this cool aisle (which literally is cold), you have the hot aisle, where the servers are spitting out hot air and now releasing it up into the data center s vents where it can be disposed of.

The weak spot of a hot aisle/cold aisle cooling system lies in the fact that not all servers exhaust hot air out from their back ends. Some servers are designed to take cold air in from the top or side panels of their boxed shell and then let hot air out from the bottom or top. This can, in effect, nullify the efficiency of the hot aisle/cold aisle cooling system because air traffic won t be flowing to its designated areas. When this is the case, you can end up with a mix of hot and cold air in a data center aisle, disturbing the cooling process and putting a crunch on energy expenses.

There are, however, ways of working around the hardware ventilation variations. In some cases, it may be possible to redirect air flow within the hardware to ensure cold air comes in through the front of the server and hot air goes out through the back. In other scenarios, data centers can flock together similarly-designed servers in different areas of the facility and arrange them so that air traffic follows the same direction in every instance.

Still, the hot aisle/cold aisle system creates the best conditions for server survival in a data center. As in any system, measures need to be taken to ensure that all the related components are installed and working properly. For example, duties might include patching up holes in hot aisles that can invade cold temperatures in the adjacent aisles.

BBC to cut Electric Proms for financial reasons

Wednesday, February 2, 2011

File:Bbcr2electricpromslogo.jpg

The BBC have announced they are to axe annual music festival Electric Proms from their schedule for financial reasons. The festival first took place in October 2006. The 2011 event will not go ahead, with last year’s festival being the last.

Bob Shennan, controller of BBC Radio 2, said he was “disappointed” with the decision to cancel the festival. He said “In the current climate, we are faced with making difficult decisions, including how best to deliver high-quality live music programming throughout the year in light of continuing efficiency savings. I feel that Radio 2 can achieve the same impact of the Electric Proms in an alternative, more cost-effective way. I’m disappointed that the lifetime of Electric Proms has come to an end, but very proud of its fantastically rewarding run of creating new moments in music for the past five years.”

During the festival’s five year run it has featured performances from stars such as Elton John, Neil Diamond, and Shirley Bassey.

The decision to axe the festival comes at a time when the BBC are planning a 20% savings cut. Last week BBC director general Mark Thompson announced 650 job losses after dropping five languages from the BBC World Service.

Sarkozy in UK to mark historic de Gaulle war broadcast

Sunday, June 20, 2010

But has the last word been said? Must hope disappear? Is defeat final? No!Charles de Gaulle broadcast

Nicolas Sarkozy visited the UK today to celebrate the 70th anniversary since Charles de Gaulle made his war broadcast. The French president and the Prince of Wales laid wreaths at the statue of Charles de Gaulle in London.

Earlier, Mr Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni visited the BBC radio studio where the famous broadcast was made on BBC France. The broadcast at the time was said to have been listened to by a very small number of listeners. Carla Bruni and Nicolas Sarkozy unveiled a plaque and viewed a tapestry given to the BBC by France as a note of gratitude after World War II.

Nicolas Sarkozy and British PM David Cameron met with 200 veterans during a ceremony at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Nicolas Sarkozy awarded the Légion d’honneur to six World War II veterans, three of whom were British.

In a short speech, Mr Cameron said the anniversary was a “reminder that Britain and France are not just neighbours in the geographical sense but also in the emotional sense.” Mr Cameron held an hour of talks with the French president at Downing Street primarily focusing on economics, Afghanistan, and other foreign policy matters. The visit is the first by a French president to mark Gen de Gaulle’s broadcast on June 18, 1940. In the stirring radio appeal, Gen de Gaulle declared himself leader of the “Free French”, spawning the French Resistance, which went on to play a crucial role in defeating the Germans.

Mr Sarkozy’s last official visit to the UK was in March 2008, when he was also accompanied by his wife.

Former ‘Top Model’ contestant Whitney Cunningham defends plus size models, celebrates the “regular woman”

Wednesday, December 5, 2007

Once you get a chance to talk to West Palm Beach, Florida native Whitney Cunningham, who placed seventh on the eighth cycle of the popular reality TV series America’s Next Top Model, you begin to understand what host Tyra Banks meant when she described her as the “full package.”

First of all, she is confident and headstrong, which is a must on these kinds of shows, almost as much as it is to take a beautiful modelesque picture. Second, she turns that confidence into drive. She has been receiving steady work as a model since leaving the show, and still believes that her goal of being the first woman to wear a size ten dress on the cover of Vogue is in reach. Third, and probably most important to television viewers, she obliterates the age-old model stereotype that to be pretty and photograph well, one must also be vapid and without a thought. A graduate of Dartmouth College, Cunningham also dreams of becoming a writer, and is working toward dual goals: a model who can express herself like no other model before her.

Cunningham recently sat down with Wikinews reporter Mike Halterman in an impassioned interview, taking hours to field questions from the reporter as well as from fans of America’s Next Top Model. Always in high spirits, Cunningham shows that she is a distinct personality who has carved her own niche in the Top Model history books. At the same time, she exhibits a joie de vivre that is oddly reminiscent of earlier Top Model fan favorite Toccara Jones, who showed America just how to be “big, black, beautiful and loving it.” However, Cunningham is quick to remind everyone that she isn’t big at all; she is simply a regular woman.

This is the first in a series of interviews with America’s Next Top Model contestants. Interviews will be published sporadically.

Risk Factors In It Consulting And Services

Risk Factors In IT Consulting And Services

by

Anderson CardRisk Factors In IT Consulting And Services IT consulting and Professional IT Services have become big businesses drawing in big bucks. With the sudden expansion in the industry and an unprecedented growth in demand, we have seen an explosion in the number of firms offering consulting and professional IT Services. With this humongous increase in the number of professional IT Service companies demand has witnessed exponential growth leading to a lot of incompetent companies that have managed to enter the business taking advantage of the shortage in supply. Thus there is always the risk of a customer hiring one of these incompetent companies. There have also been cases where an unscrupulous customer has taken advantage of unwary professional IT Service Company. Thus in this industry of cut throat competition it is imperative that one understands the risk factors involved in IT Consulting and services. These risks can be viewed from the following anglesCompany point of view: — The first and the foremost risk is one of non-payment by the customer. The easiest way to avoid this would be to do a proper credit worthiness check on the customer before entering in to an obligation. — The company must also be aware of the periodic cycles of boom and recession that hits any industry. Studying economic records over a period of time can help overcome this risk. — If a company has outsourced its business to a country like India it must keep tabs on the socio-economic and political situation in that country at all times. — Pricing also is a major source of risk. Over pricing will drive the customers away to competitors and under pricing will affect base line profitability, thus pricing must be done with a lot of care. — The company must also take in to account the prevalent economic laws like anti trust or anti competition laws in the country of operation. If the company does not do this there is a very real possibility of violation and heavy fines. — A lot of IT consulting companies have gone bust due to corrupt management practices. A good internal control avoids this riskCustomer point of view — As already stated there are a lot of companies offering IT consulting services the challenge for the customer is to choose the right one according to his needs. There is always the risk of choosing the wrong company. In order to avoid this risk the customer has to first understand the exact nature of his requirement and choose the most appropriate company offering the service. Example: For a small requirement there is no point in going to a big consulting company. There are a lot of small and medium sized professional IT service companies, which may suit the customers need better. — It is imperative that the customer does a proper analysis of the consulting company he approaches. This will reduce the risk of incompetent and poor quality service. This could be done by talking to few of the already existing customers of the consulting company and compiling their feedback. — The customer has to be sure that he is not over charged for the service provided this can be done by keeping tabs on the average consulting fees charged in the industry. — In case the customer hires the consulting company for customized software development then quality after sales service is a very important aspect that the customer must insist on.Author Bio:

Zara Kay tells Wikinews about her non-profit organisation Faithless Hijabi

Monday, July 6, 2020

A number of Muslim-majority countries around the world implement Shari’a — commonly known as Islamic law — and have laws against apostasy and blasphemy. Numerous times, over the years, people have been sentenced to death penalty for renouncing Islam. Back in 2018, a Pakistani journalism student Mashal Khan was killed by a mob lynch after he was accused of blasphemy. At times there have been protests against the restrictions on free speech in Islam.

Other than the restriction of free speech, many Muslim majority countries have declared homosexuality as a capital crime, and observe a strict dress code for women. Iran has banned a number of female chess players for not wearing a hij?b. An Iranian woman was sentenced 20 years for removing hij?b while protesting the strict dress code.

Wikinews had gotten in touch with Tanzanian-born ex-Muslim Zara Kay to discuss the struggles an ex-Muslim woman faces, as well as her organisation: Faithless Hijabi.  Faithess Hijabi is an organisation which helps other ex-Muslim women by sharing their stories and experiences.  Its Facebook page has over 7000 likes, and Zara Kay, who identifies herself as an antithiest, had prefiously helped a Saudi teenager Rahaf Mohammed escape to Canada.

The following is the interview with Zara Kay that took place last year.

IRA disbands military structure

Thursday, October 5, 2006

The Independent Monitoring Commission has reported that the Provisional Irish Republican Army has undergone major changes within their military structure and shows that the IRA Army Council wants to put its military campaign behind it. The Commission consists of John Alderdice, a former Alliance Party leader; Joe Brosnan, former Secretary General of the Department of Justice, Republic of Ireland; John Grieve, former Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and former head of the Metropolitan Police Anti-Terror Branch; and Dick Kerr, former Deputy Director of Central Intelligence Agency.

The report states the IRA no longer has the capacity to mount a military campaign anymore or return to one. The units that have been shut down were responsible for weapons-making, arms smuggling and training. The IRA decommissioned their arms last year.

The report also mentions that the IRA has also put its criminality beyond use and is “clamping down” on criminals within the organization, said Lord Alderdice, as he presented the report. He also added, “That doesn’t mean that criminal activity by all members has stopped but the leadership has made public statements and internal directions, investigated incidents of breach of the policy, even expelled some members and has emphasised the importance of ensuring that business affairs are conducted in a legitimate way.”

Finally, the report added that there is not enough evidence or intelligence to identify who killed Denis Donaldson, a British spy who infiltrated the IRA and Sinn Fein, before revealing his status as a spy.

However, the report added that splinter groups like the Real IRA (RIRA) and Continuity IRA (CIRA) are still threats and are still continuing their activity. The Real IRA was the group behind the deadly 1998 Omagh bombing. The Irish National Liberation Army (INLA) “was not capable of undertaking a sustained campaign [against the British State], nor does it aspire to” according to the report.

It is also noted the creation of two new organizations, Oglaigh na hEireann (Irish Gaelic for “Volunteers of Ireland” and is used by the Irish Defence Forces and the various IRAs.) and the Republican Defence Army. However, the groups are small dissident factions according to the report.

The report also added that the two loyalist paramilitaries, the Ulster Defence Association (UDA) and the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) are also beginning to move from violence but at slower pace and not at a grassroots level like the IRA. Another loyalist paramilitary, the Loyalist Volunteer Force

The report was received warmly by Irish Toaiseach Bertie Ahern and British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Ahern, said “These positive and clear-cut findings are of the utmost importance and significance. It is time to make decisions and for Northern Ireland to look to the future.”

“The IRA has done what we asked it to do, and while issues like policing remain to be solved, the door is now open to a final settlement, which is why the talks next week in Scotland are going to be so important.” said Tony Blair in a live statement.

In a surprising reaction, the notoriously hardline leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, Ian Paisley, also welcomed the report. He believes that his party’s pressure is working and if Sinn Fein signs up to policing there could be a deal. Paisley said, “If the police question is settled absolutely on a democratic basis and principle we would have come a long way along the road.”

Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams said “The DUP don’t have anything other than very limited options. They will or will not participate in power-sharing arrangements. If they don’t participate they are condemning people here, but particularly their own constituents, to second class public services, run by second class fly-in, fly-out British ministers. All the DUP can do is to delay, is to attempt to slow down, but they can’t stop the process of changing.”

Four arrested in three Naperville, Illinois prostitution stings

Monday, March 15, 2010

An undercover investigation by Naperville, Illinois law enforcement has led to the arrest last Thursday of four people allegedly involved in prostitution. The stings came after police received tips that people were using websites like Craigslist and Backpage.com to sell sexual performances in Naperville hotels.

Patricia H. Scoleri of Naperville was arrested after an unidentified neighbor observed consistently suspicious activity at Scoleri’s home. Traffic was unusually heavy and consisted mostly of luxury cars in an otherwise quiet, middle-class neighborhood. Also, the visitors were mainly middle-aged men, and an odd string of lavender-colored lights were hung on the front window.

Police say Scoleri worked alone. She was arrested at 2 p.m. local time (2000 UTC) and is charged with violation of anti-prostitution laws, anti-cannabis laws, and the Massage Licensing Act. She apparently has four children, but the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has neither contacted her nor received a police report on her.

The second sting occurred at 5:30 p.m the same day (2330 UTC) and resulted in the arrest of Chicago resident Tonya M. Adams. She is charged with prostitution and driving without a license. Another sting about an hour later resulted in the arrests of Jessica M. Walley, a Skokie resident, and Mark A. Williams, a self-admitted Schaumburg gang member. “Walley was charged with prostitution and unlawful possession of cannabis. Williams was charged with pimping, obstructing a peace officer, driving with a suspended license and driving without insurance,” reports WBBM News Radio 780.

All four suspects are free, having paid the required ten percent of their $1,000 bail. They may face additional charges related to crack cocaine discovered during the police investigation. Arraignment is scheduled for next month at the DuPage County Circuit Courthouse in Wheaton.
