Canadian Idol top four eliminations

Last night was the eliminations for Canadian Idol‘s top 4. Chad Doucette of Chezzetcook, Nova Scotia was voted off. The show started with the current top 4 singing together on stage.
Rex Goudie performed live on the Canadian Idol stage last night. Goudie performed his hit single “Run”. Host Ben Mulroney presented Goudie, the 2005 Canadian Idol runner-up, with a Platinum Record on behalf of Sony BMG Music (Canada) Inc. and Canadian Idol for his hit CD Under The Lights.
Eva Avila and Craig Sharpe were safe and Chad Doucette was called to centre stage with Tyler Lewis. After the commercial break the results were announced.

After the results were revealed, Mulroney thanked Doucette: “I am so glad you decided to come back and audition this year,” he said. “If there is anything you have shown us in your run to Top 4 is how memorable you are.”
“I don’t know if I was as confident in what I wanted to do before I started this competition, but now I am absolutely positive I want to be a musician,” Doucette said. “You guys showed me that it’s alright to be unique. Thank you!”
“You’ve got a unique voice, which means you have to sing your own words,” Jake Gold advised him after the results were announced. “Keep doing what you’re doing and write songs.”
Next week the top 3 will go to New York to talk with Tony Bennett.
This week Canadian Idol got a record of 4.3 million votes. “When the competition is this good and only four singers are left, each week is anybody’s game”, said Mulroney.

Open source game developer Perttu Ahola talks about Minetest with Wikinews

Recently, Finnish open-source video game developer Perttu Ahola discussed Minetest, his “longest ever project”, with Wikinews.
Started in October 2010, Minetest was an attempt by Ahola to create a sandbox game similar to Minecraft. Minecraft is a multi-platform commercial game, which was in alpha version when Ahola challenged himself to create something similar to it from scratch, he told Wikinews.
Minetest is an open-source game, which is free for anyone to download and play. It is written in the C++ programming language, and the source code is available on code-hosting site GitHub. According to Ahola, Minetest attempts to run on older hardware, with limited graphics, but to be accessible to more people: those who have outdated technology, and making it available for no cost. Minecraft, on the other hand, is a paid game, currently costing USD 26.95 for its computer version. Minecraft is currently owned by Microsoft, and performs poorly on older hardware.

Canadian PM and Quebec premier announce plans for highway development in Montreal

The PM and Quebec premier Jean Charest have announced a $1 billion highway development in Montreal. This project would be one of Canada’s largest ever public private partnerships. It will be a 35 kilometer (21.8 mile) four-lane toll road Highway 30 project, in Montreal.
“It opens up a new horizon in Quebec’s economic development,” Stephen Harper said in a speech in Lery, Quebec. “As prime minister of Canada I am very proud and welcome this latest example of the fruitful collaboration between our government and that of Quebec.”
“Since we formed the government of Canada, I have wanted to practice an open federalism, inspired by the spirit which gave birth to the Canadian confederation,” said Harper. “That includes respecting provincial jurisdictions and the sharing of responsibilities.”
“You know that open federalism is not a constitutional theory or an electoral slogan,” the prime minister added. “It’s a new approach that allows partners in the Canadian federation to work better together in the realization of projects.”
Completing the highway will allow through traffic to bypass Montreal, reducing traffic congestion and air pollution in the area.
“The announcement today speaks to the willingness of both governments to work together to better serve the interests of the population,” said Charest, who is expected to head into an election next year.
Bank of Canada Governor David Dodge and other public officials have endorsed agreements between governments and private companies to invest in roads and hospitals.
EU, US declare intent to cooperate on climate change at summit

A European Union-United States summit held in Slovenia produced a draft declaration outlining the groups’ future cooperation on climate change, energy security and financial stability. Yesterday was the final day of the summit, the last EU-US summit that US President George W. Bush will attend in his current role.
Hopes of a major breakthrough on the topic of climate change were low going into the summit. The foreign minister of Slovenia, Dimitrij Rupel, commented last week that, “on climate change, the positions are split.” Members of the 27-nation EU have regularly expressed their dissatisfaction with the US for not having ratified the Kyoto Protocol, an agreement with binding greenhouse gas emissions targets. Doubts about the summit’s efficacy were not misplaced, as no firm targets were set for actions on climate change.
The EU and US agreed to cooperate increasingly in science and technology research for energy and climate change purposes, including carbon capture and storage, and hydrogen fuel cells. The EU reaffirmed its commitments as per the Kyoto Protocol, but the US restated that developing countries such as China and India must be made to sign up to such global agreements before it will sign on.
Steps to secure energy sources for the future were also discussed. Promoting the creation of multiple pipelines to supply more natural gas to Europe was determined a priority, despite the fact that this would encourage an increase in emissions from gas use.
Bush commented in a follow-up news conference: “I think we can get a global agreement on climate change during my presidency – just so you know.”
17 million accounts’ hashed passwords, emails stolen, Zomato says

Yesterday, Zomato, a food ordering and restaurant finding company, announced security breach of more than 17 million accounts, via their official blog. A hacker operating under the alias nclay uploaded evidence to prove they had the stolen data — hashed passwords and emails — for sale, Hackread.com reported. Zomato later announced they contacted the hacker, who asked Zomato to organise a bug bounty programme.
The food ordering company, with 120 million monthly users, said the payment information of the users was not located with this data and was not leaked. Zomato said it uses PCI Data Security Standards.
As a security measure, all the passwords of the involved Zomato accounts were reset and all of the accounts were forcibly logged out from the application and website. The company said only hashed passwords were compromised.
Hashed passwords are encrypted and, per Zomato, every password had a different “salt”, for cryptographic salting was performed before hashing the original password. A “salt” is a random set of characters added before encryption to make decryption to obtain the original passkey more difficult.
The hashed password itself can not be used to access the account. In the blog post before contacting the hacker, saying “internal (human) security breach”, Zomato suggested this could have happened after a worker’s development account was hijacked. After contacting the hacker, and promising a bug bounty programme on Hackerone, they said, the hacker agreed and removed the stolen data which was put on sale on the dark web. Zomato said they are looking forward to working closely with the ethical hacker community on security vulnerabilities.

Analysts are downgrading valuations of insurance companies which are facing lower margins in the new regulatory system.
Analysts opine it is difficult to predict persistency in new Ulips (unit-linked insurance plans) as the reduced commissions have failed to enthuse the distributors.
Also, factors such as the unclear product approach and reduction in branches and employees could impact the long-term franchises, analysts say.
All these factors have put the margins of life insurance companies under significant pressure, they say.
The margins of life insurance companies have definitely gone down due to reduced commissions on Ulips. All charges have also considerably reduced. Since October 2010, the new business premium of private insurance players has slowed down considerably. The companies have also brought down their branches and number of employees considerably. says SB Mathur, secretary general, Life Insurance Council.

There has been a slew of regulatory changes that have impacted the industry. Regulations have impacted both the product structures and feasibility as well as distribution models. While the margins on Ulips, which were 75% or so of industry volumes, have come down substantially, pensions that contributed to around 30% have become unviable, says TR Ramachandran, MD & CEO, Aviva India.

Regulatory restrictions have reduced the leeway of insurance companies to offer much variety in the product portfolios, said Nischint Chawathe and Manish Karwa of Kotak Institutional Equities in a report released on Tuesday.
They have also identified the key challenges faced by this sector. According to them, volumes may be imperative to leverage overhead costs, but product strategy is still unclear.
Popular products like pensions are not attractive anymore. The traditional policies seem to be a focus area, but most companies do not have the franchisees to scale up this segment.
It is felt that reduction in branches and employees will result in saving operating expenses, but the strategy can affect long-term franchise.
Our margins are affected, but lesser than other players. Earlier, pension products contributed 25% to the total sales, but since pension products have become less attractive it has affected the overall sales, says G V Nageswara Rao, MD & CEO, IDBI Federal Life Insurance Co Ltd.
The other challenges identified by Chawathe and Karwa are, predicting the persistency of new Ulips (in the light of longer minimum tenure) and the new commission structure, which they feel may not motivate distributors though a reaction is yet to be seen.
They have reduced the first-year commission and are giving higher focus on renewals. It is also felt by them that new business trends for the past two months appear weak.
But analysts think insurance companies, which are a part of a banking group, have slight advantage over their pure standalone private-sector peers. They find it convenient to sell their insurance products through their banking channel.
Insurance companies, which are a part of a banking group, will have a lesser impact on valuations compared with pure standalone private sector insurance players because these players at least have their own branch network due to which they will continue selling their products. Due to this advantage such players have also garnered a better market share in the last one year, said Vaibhav Agrawal, vice-president- research at Angel Broking.
