Israel Journal: Is Yossi Vardi a good father to his entrepreneurial children?

Thursday, December 20, 2007

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone is currently, courtesy of the Israeli government and friends, visiting Israel. This is a first-hand account of his experiences and may — as a result — not fully comply with Wikinews’ neutrality policy. Please note this is a journalism experiment for Wikinews and put constructive criticism on the collaboration page.

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Dr. Yossi Vardi is known as Israel’s ‘Father of the Entrepreneur’, and he has many children in the form of technology companies he has helped to incubate in Tel Aviv‘s booming Internet sector. At the offices of Superna, one such company, he introduced a whirlwind of presentations from his baby incubators to a group of journalists. What stuck most in my head was when Vardi said, “What is important is not the technology, but the talent.” Perhaps because he repeated this after each young Internet entrepreneur showed us his or her latest creation under Vardi’s tutelage. I had a sense of déjà vu from this mantra. A casual reader of the newspapers during the Dot.com boom will remember a glut of stories that could be called “The Rise of the Failure”; people whose technology companies had collapsed were suddenly hot commodities to start up new companies. This seemingly paradoxical thinking was talked about as new back then; but even Thomas Edison—the Father of Invention—is oft-quoted for saying, “I have not failed. I have just found ten thousand ways that won’t work.”

Vardi’s focus on encouraging his brood of talent regardless of the practicalities stuck out to me because of a recent pair of “dueling studies” The New York Times has printed. These are the sort of studies that confuse parents on how to raise their kids. The first, by Carol Dweck at Stanford University, came to the conclusion that children who are not praised for their efforts, regardless of the outcome’s success, rarely attempt more challenging and complex pursuits. According to Dweck’s study, when a child knows that they will receive praise for being right instead of for tackling difficult problems, even if they fail, they will simply elect to take on easy tasks in which they are assured of finding the solution.

Only one month earlier the Times produced another story for parents to agonize over, this time based on a study from the Brookings Institution, entitled “Are Kids Getting Too Much Praise?” Unlike Dweck’s clinical study, Brookings drew conclusions from statistical data that could be influenced by a variety of factors (since there was no clinical control). The study found American kids are far more confident that they have done well than their Korean counterparts, even when the inverse is true. The Times adds in the words of a Harvard faculty psychologist who intoned, “Self-esteem is based on real accomplishments. It’s all about letting kids shine in a realistic way.” But this is not the first time the self-esteem generation’s proponents have been criticized.

Vardi clearly would find himself encouraged by Dweck’s study, though, based upon how often he seemed to ask us to keep our eyes on the people more than the products. That’s not to say he has not found his latest ICQ, though only time—and consumers—will tell.

For a Web 2.User like myself, I was most fascinated by Fixya, a site that, like Wikipedia, exists on the free work of people with knowledge. Fixya is a tech support site where people who are having problems with equipment ask a question and it is answered by registered “experts.” These experts are the equivalent of Wikipedia’s editors: they are self-ordained purveyors of solutions. But instead of solving a mystery of knowledge a reader has in their head, these experts solve a problem related to something you have bought and do not understand. From baby cribs to cellular phones, over 500,000 products are “supported” on Fixya’s website. The Fixya business model relies upon the good will of its experts to want to help other people through the ever-expanding world of consumer appliances. But it is different from Wikipedia in two important ways. First, Fixya is for-profit. The altruistic exchange of information is somewhat dampened by the knowledge that somebody, somewhere, is profiting from whatever you give. Second, with Wikipedia it is very easy for a person to type in a few sentences about a subject on an article about the Toshiba Satellite laptop, but to answer technical problems a person is experiencing seems like a different realm. But is it? “It’s a beautiful thing. People really want to help other people,” said the presenter, who marveled at the community that has already developed on Fixya. “Another difference from Wikipedia is that we have a premium content version of the site.” Their premium site is where they envision making their money. Customers with a problem will assign a dollar amount based upon how badly they need an answer to a question, and the expert-editors of Fixya will share in the payment for the resolved issue. Like Wikipedia, reputation is paramount to Fixya’s experts. Whereas Wikipedia editors are judged by how they are perceived in the Wiki community, the amount of barnstars they receive and by the value of their contributions, Fixya’s customers rate its experts based upon the usefulness of their advice. The site is currently working on offering extended warranties with some manufacturers, although it was not clear how that would work on a site that functioned on the work of any expert.

Another collaborative effort product presented to us was YouFig, which is software designed to allow a group of people to collaborate on work product. This is not a new idea, although may web-based products have generally fallen flat. The idea is that people who are working on a multi-media project can combine efforts to create a final product. They envision their initial market to be academia, but one could see the product stretching to fields such as law, where large litigation projects with high-level of collaboration on both document creation and media presentation; in business, where software aimed at product development has generally not lived up to its promises; and in the science and engineering fields, where multi-media collaboration is quickly becoming not only the norm, but a necessity.

For the popular consumer market, Superna, whose offices hosted our meeting, demonstrated their cost-saving vision for the Smart Home (SH). Current SH systems require a large, expensive server in order to coordinate all the electronic appliances in today’s air-conditioned, lit and entertainment-saturated house. Such coordinating servers can cost upwards of US$5,000, whereas Superna’s software can turn a US$1,000 hand-held tablet PC into household remote control.

There were a few start-ups where Vardi’s fatherly mentoring seemed more at play than long-term practical business modeling. In the hot market of WiFi products, WeFi is software that will allow groups of users, such as friends, share knowledge about the location of free Internet WiFi access, and also provide codes and keys for certain hot spots, with access provided only to the trusted users within a group. The mock-up that was shown to us had a Google Maps-esque city block that had green points to the known hot spots that are available either for free (such as those owned by good Samaritans who do not secure their WiFi access) or for pay, with access information provided for that location. I saw two long-term problems: first, WiMAX, which is able to provide Internet access to people for miles within its range. There is already discussion all over the Internet as to whether this technology will eventually make WiFi obsolete, negating the need to find “hot spots” for a group of friends. Taiwan is already testing an island-wide WiMAX project. The second problem is if good Samaritans are more easily located, instead of just happened-upon, how many will keep their WiFi access free? It has already become more difficult to find people willing to contribute to free Internet. Even in Tel Aviv, and elsewhere, I have come across several secure wireless users who named their network “Fuck Off” in an in-your-face message to freeloaders.

Another child of Vardi’s that the Brookings Institution might say was over-praised for self-esteem but lacking real accomplishment is AtlasCT, although reportedly Nokia offered to pay US$8.1 million for the software, which they turned down. It is again a map-based software that allows user-generated photographs to be uploaded to personalized street maps that they can share with friends, students, colleagues or whomever else wants to view a person’s slideshow from their vacation to Paris (“Dude, go to the icon over Boulevard Montmartre and you’ll see this girl I thought was hot outside the Hard Rock Cafe!”) Aside from the idea that many people probably have little interest in looking at the photo journey of someone they know (“You can see how I traced the steps of Jesus in the Galilee“), it is also easy to imagine Google coming out with its own freeware that would instantly trump this program. Although one can see an e-classroom in architecture employing such software to allow students to take a walking tour through Rome, its desirability may be limited.

Whether Vardi is a smart parent for his encouragement, or in fact propping up laggards, is something only time will tell him as he attempts to bring these products of his children to market. The look of awe that came across each company’s representative whenever he entered the room provided the answer to the question of Who’s your daddy?

NASA’s Juno spacecraft enters Jupiter orbit

Wednesday, July 6, 2016

Yesterday, NASA announced their spacecraft Juno has reached Jupiter orbit. It was launched almost five years ago to investigate the largest planet of the Solar System, especially its past.

Charles Bolden, NASA administrator, said, “Independence Day always is something to celebrate, but today we can add to America’s birthday another reason to cheer — Juno is at Jupiter”. He also added the spacecraft would help study the evolution of the Solar System and explore Jupiter’s radiation belts.

NASA spent US$1.1 billion for Juno. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) reported Juno was confirmed in Jupiter’s orbit at 0353 UTC. Including the camera, the probe has nine scientific instruments. Juno has covered 2.7 billion kilometres (1.7 billion miles) to reach Jupiter.

NASA said non-essential equipment was turned off for the approach. They expect photos in some days. The first orbital revolution period is 53 days. Juno is expected to orbit the planet 37 times keeping an altitude of 5000 kilometres (3100 miles) above the Jovian clouds and then fall into the planet in 2018.

NASA’s Galileo, launched in 1989, found evidence of saline water on Jovian satellites Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.

The electronics have been encased in titanium to protect them from high-energy radiation.

Manchester United signs Pogba, now costliest player in history

Wednesday, August 10, 2016

Yesterday, English football club Manchester United F.C. announced signing Frenchman Paul Pogba from Italian club Juventus F.C. Pogba rejoined The Red Devils on a five-year contract for €105 million making him the most expensive footballer of all time by breaking the previous fee record of Gareth Bale’s transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Spanish capital club Real Madrid.

23-year-old midfielder Paul Pogba made his professional debut for United in 2011 after graduating from their academy. He played only seven games before leaving for Juventus the next year. Spending four years with the Old Lady, Pogba has won four Serie A titles, three Italian Super Cups, and two Coppa Italia trophies as well.

Pogba has played 38 games for the French side, netting six goals. Last month he collected a silver medal with the national team finishing runners-up at the UEFA Euro 2016, losing 1–0 to Portugal. This year, Pogba was named in the FIFA FIFPro team of the year as well as the UEFA team of the year.

After signing the five-year contract, Paul Pogba said, “I am delighted to rejoin United. It has always been a club with a special place in my heart and I am looking forward to working with [United manager] José Mourinho.” Mourinho praised Pogba and said Pogba “will be a key part of the United team”.

Pogba has been allotted the number 6 jersey. Previously, Manchester United signed Zlatan Ibrahimovi?, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Eric Bailly.

What Does A Pool Service Offer?

byalex

If you have a pool, you might enjoy many aspects of the convenience. Swimming whenever you want at the privacy of your own home can be very nice, but owning a pool comes with a lot of added responsibilities as well. You might find that you spend more of your time cleaning and maintaining your pool than you do actually enjoying it. If you would like to go back to simply enjoying your time off instead of cleaning all of the time, you might want to consider a pool service in your area.

Pool service companies are paid to do regular maintenance on your pool. These are things you likely can easily do yourself, but it can be so time consuming that you have a hard time finding space in your life for much else. Not only will the pool service take care of the time consuming tasks, but, as professionals, they will likely do it with more efficiency.

Here are a few things you will want to know about pool services in your area before you begin looking for a pool service company to hire. First, what types of services do they provide? The pool service company you hire could do a number of different things. Many of them specialize in pools in general and they can do everything from regular cleaning and maintenance to closing your pool up for the winter or opening it for the summer. They will always make sure you have the right chemical levels in your pool and they will keep your filtration systems clean as well. If you have specific needs or wants for your pool, make sure you ask the pool service companies when you call around so that you know what they do and do not cover.

When you have a pool, you have a large investment in your yard. Having to constantly make repairs because things break down on your pool can make it even more expensive. A pool service can help prevent those types of prepares by accentuating regular maintenance. Having a pool is just like having anything else. If you take care of it, it will serve you better. You wouldn’t dream of driving your car endlessly with no oil changes. The same is true for your pool. And hiring a pool service can help you take care of those maintenance issues with little to no time on your part.

In order to keep your investment clean and clear and your pool enjoyable for you, your family, and your guests, hiring a pool service to help you with regular maintenance and other issues is a great idea. Call a few different companies for quotes and you will find the one that best fits your budget and your overall needs.

Pool Service Phoenix Arizona– H2O cleaning service is a website for a family owned company in Phoenix that offers swimming pool services and repair for homeowners and businesses throughout the area.

Vancouver will run out of office space in 5 years

Tuesday, February 13, 2007

In Vancouver, a 20-year urban success story may yet have a sad ending. The city’s downtown population has doubled to 80,000 in the last 20 years thanks to Vancouver’s “Living First” policy – a planning strategy that favors residential development over commercial. And planners are expecting the population to reach more than 120,000 by 2030. But while downtown booms with people, business is busting. The International Herald Tribune reports that the city’s recently-released jobs and land-use study is estimating that downtown Vancouver may run out of commercial and office space within 5 years.

The ‘Vancouver problem’ is one that many cities in the United States could only hope to have. On the contrary, much effort has been put into bringing residential life back into the city centres. In Los Angeles, San Diego, Miami, and Washington, D.C. there has been a condominium boom in recent years, but these cities are far from the situation Vancouver faces now.

To counter the trend in Vancouver, planners are proposing changes to the city’s zoning regulations, including the passage of more lenient building height restrictions. But because residential developments are so much more profitable than commercial and office space, some public officials are proposing offering better incentives to the developers willing to build commercial. Another option is to expand the moratorium that was placed on new housing development in the central business district two years ago.

Translink is currently involved in a major expansion of the 49.5 km (30.8 mi) Skytrain system centred on downtown Vancouver. Construction of the Canada and Evergreen lines is underway. The former will be complete in 2009, and the latter in 2011.

Tips From The Beauty Secrets Of The Stars}

Submitted by: Jackie De Burca

Not all of us can have an entire beauty team behind us like Brooke Shields, but we can borrow some of the beauty secrets of the stars and mix them in with a good daily routine for sparkling results.

Did you know that Catherine Zeta-Jones brushes her teeth with mashed-up strawberries which she mixes with baking soda? Strawberries contain malic acid which is a mild astringent. For her wonderful mane of hair she keeps it shiny by brushing in some castor oil. What miracle does she use on her skin to make it look so wonderful? Catherine uses a natural foundation which is made only from pure, crushed minerals from the earth and also has SP15. It “looks like a powder, feels like a cream and buffs on like silk!”

Brooke Shields on the other hand likes to mix bronzing lotion with a body lotion and self tanner, which helps you achieve a bronzed, unblemished even skin tone without even putting on foundation. Or what about for the skin all over your body, taking a tip from Teri Hatcher who pours her left over red wine into her bath! The grapes contain resveratrol which is an antibiotic type substance that protects the vines from fungus. It can make the skin surface firm, while stimulating cell multiplication and improving elasticity.

Did you know that regardless of your skin types you should go without makeup as often as possible as it actually interferes with the skins’ repairing process. Of course some natural products such as have crushed minerals in them so this is different. However if you just think of it as allowing your skin to breathe it will make more sense to you. It is ideal to do this over a quiet weekend and focus on drinking plenty of water to speed up the process of flushing the toxiins out.

Hilary Duff and Jessica Alba both see the same facialist who suggests livening up dull skin with a refrigerated spray bottle of mint tea. This will cool the skin and stimulate the blood flow. But no matter what the stars secrets are your daily routine should include the natural way to care for your skin which is to drink enough water. Keeping yourself hydrated will not only prevent constipation but will literally bathe the cells of your skin.

Eating enough fibre will also helps to keep your system healthy and this will keep your skin healthier. Proper digestion keeps toxins from accumulating, keeping the skin younger looking. Keep your circulation invigorated by some sort of daily exercise. This will help your overall health level and the condition of your skin as well.

Stress is a naughty fellow who plays havoc with our skin and sometimes our health. Find a way to do something if only for 15 minutes per day, like sitting listening to music that calms you , meditation, yoga or stretching, or a brisk walk in nature.

Eliminating as much sugar from your daily food intake as possible will do wonders for the health of your skin. Sugar will take its toll and make the skin sag and wrinkled over time. Basically it will speed up the aging process of the skin. Add natural oils to your diet by including the essential fatty acids that your body needs. Good sources of essential fats are Salmon, flaxseed oil or walnut oil combined with vinegar as a dressing for your salad and possibly fish oil supplements. Combine some of these ideas and enjoy the results as you will feel more beautiful.
